Having worked at BAC during this time and only being there for 1 year a lot of my questions about how the company was run had been confirmed. It was clearly a boys club starting with Lewis. The book confirmed the atmosphere, the constant change in management, HR running the business units and people, the shock about acquiring ML, the friction between Lewis and Thain. It's a behemoth organization that was hard to navigate due to the constant changes. Moynihan was a great choice to run the organization.

I just started and have done a hundred pages or so. I find those page to be very detailed, descriptive, and fair. Fair was important to me in this case because the head of Merrill-Lynch was a Black guy (me too) and I wanted to see if racial problems lead to the "demise" of ML. (I was aware that the firm lost a huge "racial" suit involving my personal advisor in Nashville.) As written, so far, everything is detailed, and specific to the problems ("non-racial") in the firm. Several screw-ups are referred to (as well as several dedicated professionals). I am enjoying reading about the firm in such detail. I feel like I really am beginning know, so far, what happened at the firm. I will definitely continue reading.

So how to review a book with absolutely no redeeming characters? Where the only ones that look remotely ok were only such because they talked to the writer more than the others.The book itself is a worthy history of Merrill Lynch's last 18 months as independent company and it's rocky merger with Bank of America. It shows the management to be self-centered, myopic and completely incompetent. Amazingly everyone gets out alive. Stan O'Neil gets $160mm. John Thain is the CEO of CIT. Greg Flemming is one of the top executives at Morgan Stanley. Bob McCann similarly positioned at UBS. Ahmass Fakahany the former head of Risk and Co-President is now a NY restauranteur. Even the chief culprit Osman Semerci seems to be the CEO of a $2 billion Hedge Fund in London (Duet). Savings are wiped out. Thousands and thousands of people lose jobs and houses and strangely those at the center of the storm are doing just fine.The book is a page turner. There are moments of real drama. The firm, the banking business and the economy are all sinking. The key subjects at Merrill and BoA are well profiled. The conflicts and live timeline given a "novel" feel to the storyline. At certain points it feels oddly distant from the events of the day. For example it barely discusses the spring of 2008 which was a time of huge uncertainty. Instead of telling us again how certain people felt I think he could have tied more of what was going on around Merrill at that time. But still good pace throughout.The book lacks technical detail. Other reviewers have mentioned this. Given it's now 2011 there are probably enough books explaining the "what" of the crisis where perhaps this is the "who". But I'd say this suffers a bit as a result. In talking about Merrill's losses in the fall of 2008 there is scant detail on how it happened and yet this was the biggest loss by far - $18 billion and the CDO positions had already been sold. Michael Lewis showed in "The Big Short" that you can still write a great book and include some good details on what are the investments that when wrong without boring people.I thought the writer was also a bit soft on Thain. They talked about his expert handling of the LTCM wind down from 1998 but there are famous stories of Goldman front running that unwind from months before that fund crashed. Wouldn't it put Thain's character in a different light to be more skeptical of his role? I would also doubt that he was the key driver of Goldman's mortgage trading in the 1980's.Secondly he seems overly sympathetic to Greg Fleming. On at least a dozen occasions he talks about the 15 or 16 years that Flemming has put into the firm only to see it blow up. Come on. 16 years is not that long. Mentioning it once or twice is ok but it is not a badge or a special amount of time, particularly when you're making unbelievable amounts of money. Please remember everyone is in it for the money.His descriptions of Bank of America culture were fascinating. Clearly they had an inferiority complex overlayed with enormous bravado; seeing themselves as outside the New York banking scene and resentful of being seen as less sophisticated being based in Charlotte, North Carolina. They are not a bad bank by any means but clearly different from their major competitors. Given that Countrywide really buried that bank Farrell could have spent some time on it. It really was the Achilles heel that ruined Lewis' career. Ken Lewis probably could have survived the losses and ugly politics on closing the Merrill acquisition if his own bank were in better shape.In the end, this is a good book about the failure of Merrill Lynch and of how bad Stan O'Neil screwed up (repeatedly). There were colossal errors in judgement and a shocking misunderstanding of risk management. Risk management is 50% systems (which Merrill clearly did not have) and 50% honest dialogues with qualified practitioners which also did not exist. HOPEFULLY something is learned from it. If nothing else O'Neil should be kicked to the curb and stepped on (repeatedly).

This is a deeply researched and briskly written account of the demise of Merrill Lynch amidst the general market turmoil of 2008//9. It does a good job of setting context - both in terms of the culture and history of the two firms as well as the personal motivations and incentives the key players brought to the table. If you don;t have much background in financial matters - you will still understand the book and get the bigger picture.My irritation with it - is Farrell actually Greg Fleming in disguise?? The book was incredibly skewed to Greg the Superhero angle. Here is Greg conceiving of the deal before anyone else. Here is Greg getting $30 a share. Here is Greg waiving his bonus. Here is Greg being offered a job which would humiliate John Thain. Here is Greg, Here is Greg.

Farrell has written a very detailed and insightful overview of the events around Bank of America's purchase of Merrill Lynch. As with many of the books written on the financial crisis it details how ignorance around the basic principles of prudent risk management resulted in catastrophic events. Whether the ignorance was driven by greed, stupidity, or blind faith in the market continually going up (or a combination thereof), becomes almost irrelevant, but this book does a great job of investigating and demonstrating the results that came about as a result of less than ideal decisions. It delves deeply into the psyche and decisions made by O'Neal, Lewis, Thain, Semerci etc and how these eventually played out. The author is also not afraid to assign blame and I found his analysis to be fair and balanced. Farrell has certainly invested a great deal of effort into researching the events and characters, and then moulding these into a coherent and entertaining book. The book has a great amount of detail and information, but flows very well, holding the reader's attention from the first page to the last.

Kindle Unlimited, the writer definitely isn't 'right' but he is on ku, think a few binge readings in my future.Caverns and Creatures: Volume I (Books 1 - 4)Critical Failures (Caverns and Creatures Book 1) Critical Failures II (Caverns and Creatures Book 2) Critical Failures III (Caverns and Creatures Book 3) Critical Failures IV (Caverns and Creatures Book 4)various numerous other D&D booksSpace PuppiesFlying Toasters - The DeadPixel Tales {one of collection of writers, seems to be permafree}

d6 (Caverns and Creatures collection 1) by Robert Bevan is a blast! I got the audio version so I could sit back and listen to the crazy episodes and just giggle and laugh and enjoy myself, a real treat! I love these books and use them as a stress relief. They are full of rude and rough jokes but totally funny! I wouldn't say that if they weren't. I had four boys and I have heard plenty of rude jokes, many not funny at all but these books are hilarious! I am an old lady but still love good crazy humor when I find it. Old not dead. Fart jokes never get old. The voice on the narration really adds to the story too. The way he does it adds character to the characters and it is terrific! I bought all the d series, can't wait to finish them.

Think of this as some side adventures from our intrepid heroes from the Critical Failures series. Like any good RPG campaign, there's always a lot of side quests to go on, and this collection of 6 short stories takes you along as Cooper, Julien, Tim, and Dave try to level up, get some gold, and stay alive in the world of Caverns of Creatures.

Hopefully you are considering purchasing this after reading Caverns and Creatures 1, 2, or 3. If not, these stories will not make a lot of sense.If you enjoyed 1 and 2, this collection of stories are certainly highly recommended. If the story was beginning to get old, too obscene or childish, or if you don't like fantasy and role playing tropes, then you should likely skip these short stories.A few critiques: none of this seems to be part of the canon! Some of these stories are quite good, but like Tim the elf's pet, they are merely created to be forgotten. Because of this, there is no risk of anything in the world being altered, so it is a bit like riding a roller coaster- you know that the ride will end where it started and everyone will survive.Having said that, I liked it a lot. It is exciting at times and the author comes up with interesting solutions for problems that come up.If you are a fan, buy! If you can't stand fantasy or have no knowledge of tabletop and pen and paper roleplaying, I'd avoid these. Like the original books, there is plenty of language, potty humor, sexual humor, and "gay" jokes that will likely offend concerned parents and easily offendable people. Not recommended for anything younger than high school and it depends on the teenager.

I enjoyed the Critical Failures books and I thought that these stories would be a nice way to spend the time between releases and I ended up loving the series of short stories more than the main series. I'm still struggling with the amount of disgusting things happening but I try to get over it because they make sense and they're always helpful to the plot.My favorite story of this collection is Shipfaced with ZOMBIE ATTACK!!! in second place.

This is more of the same as the Caverns and Creatures novels, just in short story form. It's entertaining in its juvenile, crude, and crass way. Don't expect sophistication, high brow humor, or thrilling heroics. Expect plenty of fart gags, dick jokes, and cowardly, bumbling morons.

More lowbrow fun from the author of Critical Failures, d6 is a value-priced collection of short stories set in the Caverns and Creatures universe. No mopey dark elves here, just good crude fun and clever misuse of gaming rules (As a gamer, I'll never be able to look at the Mount spell the same way again.). I would definitely recommend buying this collection over paying for the short stories piecemeal-once you've read one, you'll definitely want to pick up the others as well.The characters of Chaz and Katherine, originally seen in Critical Failures, are absent here. Here's hoping they show up in Book 2.

I fell into this series by accident but quickly fell in love with it. I recommend reading the 1st book in the series before reading this one. I quickly read books 1 and 2 and was sad to find no book 3(just came out-hooray) so I settled for this collection of short stories. I enjoyed all the stories and really hope this series continues on for a long time for I would hate to say goodbye to them.

This author's work will likely never be considered literature, but my god is it fun. My favorite story from this collection is Creep on the Borderlands; I laughed out loud many times, something I rarely do when reading comedy. This series of books is very much tailored to a niche audience; it's you've never played a tabletop RPG, or more specifically, D&D, you won't get the nuances of the storytelling, but thankfully, there's a character - Julian - who is a D&D newb and acts as the everyman to those who haven't played the game.

Burdens of Sister Margaret, The

From Booklist

Life in a seventeenth-century cloistered convent would not seem to be the most exciting of topics, but it turns out to be more provocative than one might expect. Harline, a scholar in European history, was doing research in a Belgian archive when he came upon letters and documents from a convent in the town of Louvain. The focal point of the correspondence was Sister Margaret Smulders, who earned the enmity of her fellow sisters by claiming she was sexually harassed by the convent's popular confessor. Witchcraft, demonic possession, and sexual tension all play roles in this bizarre tale, but the fragmentary source material leaves Harline no choice but to put together a lot of the puzzle pieces himself. A more serious problem for the general audience is the dryness of the prose, which works against the provocative subject matter. Still, for larger religion and history collections, this peek inside the walls of a counter-Reformation convent offers new information about a largely hidden world. Ilene Cooper

From Kirkus Reviews

A scrupulous dissection of the daily lives of a group of cloistered 17th-century Franciscan nuns as seen through the eyes of one blighted sister in their midst. Harline (History/Brigham Young Univ.) has amassed rare evidence from a convent in the Spanish Netherlands to show that, during the Catholic Counter Reformation, religious life was ``shaped by debate...rather than established forever by arbitrary proclamations from on high.'' Toward this end, he offers the correspondence of (and about) the convent's controversial Sister Margaret Smulders, whom he calls ``one of the most prolific letter- writers in early modern monastic history.'' Margaret earns the hatred of her Mother Superior and becomes an outcast among her sisters after her allegations of sexual harassment against the well-liked convent confessor result in his dismissal. She is charged with harboring demonic spirits and all manner of evils. She is then banished--remaining defenseless until the archbishop and another powerful male religious figure become her advocates. But after exorcisms and an apparent ``recovery,'' Margaret returns only to be excluded from the main life of the convent. Finally, she becomes a full-time chronicler of convent ills. Her vast correspondence with the powerful clergy--written mainly in anticipation of their periodic corrective ``visitations''--form the basis of Harline's narrative. But Margaret's litany of complaints varies little. What are interesting points the first time around- -that too many nuns pursue temporal pleasures or fraternize with outsiders through the convent gates--wear thin by the fourth official visit. Though many of the reforms Margaret recommends are actually prescribed, few of them are enacted, and she dies largely defeated. Though sad, Margaret's tale effectively illustrates Harline's point that ``if a superior wanted to ensure that reform went in a certain way, he would have to do more than merely issue decrees.'' A lovingly wrought--but overly lengthy--bit of arcane religious history. (b&w illustrations) -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
