A scrupulous dissection of the daily lives of a group of cloistered 17th-century Franciscan nuns as seen through the eyes of one blighted sister in their midst. Harline (History/Brigham Young Univ.) has amassed rare evidence from a convent in the Spanish Netherlands to show that, during the Catholic Counter Reformation, religious life was ``shaped by debate...rather than established forever by arbitrary proclamations from on high.'' Toward this end, he offers the correspondence of (and about) the convent's controversial Sister Margaret Smulders, whom he calls ``one of the most prolific letter- writers in early modern monastic history.'' Margaret earns the hatred of her Mother Superior and becomes an outcast among her sisters after her allegations of sexual harassment against the well-liked convent confessor result in his dismissal. She is charged with harboring demonic spirits and all manner of evils. She is then banished--remaining defenseless until the archbishop and another powerful male religious figure become her advocates. But after exorcisms and an apparent ``recovery,'' Margaret returns only to be excluded from the main life of the convent. Finally, she becomes a full-time chronicler of convent ills. Her vast correspondence with the powerful clergy--written mainly in anticipation of their periodic corrective ``visitations''--form the basis of Harline's narrative. But Margaret's litany of complaints varies little. What are interesting points the first time around- -that too many nuns pursue temporal pleasures or fraternize with outsiders through the convent gates--wear thin by the fourth official visit. Though many of the reforms Margaret recommends are actually prescribed, few of them are enacted, and she dies largely defeated. Though sad, Margaret's tale effectively illustrates Harline's point that ``if a superior wanted to ensure that reform went in a certain way, he would have to do more than merely issue decrees.''  Beginner's Guide to Creating Manga Art is a more of a tips and techniques book rather than a structured course on drawing manga from start to end. The book covers only characters.It starts with lessons on features, expressions, anatomy, poses, clothing and character designs. The lessons are brief and are covered under 30 pages. For example, for drawing of heads, the front and sides are taught. But for heads at other angles, while there are illustrated examples with guidelines, there aren't enough in depth explanation to go with it. This section is just an introduction on figure drawing.The second part of the book features tutorials from various artists on designing characters. There are many useful tips on drawing, what type of materials to use and things to look out for. Many artists are using traditional medium but there are a few tutorials on Photoshop.The third part is on colouring the characters that were drawn in the previous chapter. The tutorials cover a variety of tools that are used, such as coloured pencils, markers, watercolour and Photoshop. Again, there are good tips on handling the specific mediums.The last few pages feature a manga art gallery from various artists.Overall, this book is more on understanding the style of manga art, and the tutorials that show you how to create them.For beginners, I would also recommend getting dedicated books such as Drawing the Head and Hands and Figure Drawing for All It's Worth. Ok, I really thought this was the book that was going to demistify manga style for me. I've been drawing humans realistically and in Western styles for years. Maybe its because I'm so used to realistic proportions, but I just cant seem to be able to create a charming manga style without directly copying the styles of manga artists. My proportions, and the overall look is just screaming "Western". So, I thought, based on existing reviews, that this book would be perfect for me. They say it's more descriptive of the style as a whole than a true beginners guide. They say its better for artists who are above beginner level.To be honest, I'm not sure who its for. My guess would be for people who don't know what manga even is, just to explain it to them. Otherwise, it's practically useless.It has very brief descriptions of manga genres, and it doesn't go into detail on any of them or their styles. That's no help to an artist like me looking to learn how to create a manga style. They don't even visually represent each genre's major styles.It has very rudimental and mediocre guides on facial proportion and manga style anatomy. the artist who created those guides does not seem comfortable with the human form. It's one thing to complain that a manga style lacks realism(of course many manga styles really lack realism), but these guides ...they didn't even look professionally drawn. They looked uncomfortable. I actually cringed a little at some of the illustrations. I don't know how to draw manga, and I can draw better manga than those guides. This part of the book should have been illustrated by the most experienced, most comfortable, and most masterful artist on their project-- not the worst one. Imagine if I actually was a beginner? How am I going to learn if my foundation is based on bad anatomy drawings? That would slow me down for sure.After that disappointment, the rest of the book just lets you peek on different artists creating a single piece of work in their individual style. Cool. This isn't bad at all. Except that there's really not much left of the book at this point. It's surprisingly thin.Honestly, If you're actually a beginner, you might be better off buying one of Chris Hart's updated books. Even if his illustrations have not been top grade in the past, he more than makes up for it with easy to digest text, coupled with helpful diagrams, and tutorials. If you're not a beginner and you already have your foundations, just dive directly into the world of manga. You will learn more by studying real artists than with this book.

Worth every penny! It's hard to find detailed books like this and the art is beautiful!The drawing and coloring tutorials lead the reader step-by-step through each process and tells them what should be focused on most, as well as the importance of details. There are different coloring techniques as well. This book it perfect for everyone, whether you prefer to draw on your computer or sketch on paper. It's great for beginners!

The product itself is nice, but might as well buy it used because I'm highly disappointed how mangled and used up my so called "new" product came in. Had to wipe a brown dirt smear off the book which I have no idea how it got under the protective shell. And the shell has huge cuts and scrapes. My camera is so bright that it doesn't show all of the scratches but the case is almost cloudy from scratches. This is supposed to be a gift and I am worried I might have to find something else and return this bc of its condition.As for the book itself, I had already seen it in person so I knew the content was good. It has a very nice variety of art styles and a mix of traditional and digital coloring techniques. It could almost pass for an art book bc of the beautiful array of works. Each work comes with a detailed yet clear description and breakdown of what tools the artist used and their coloring process from start to finish which is super helpful.If only it was actually new!

Not cheap, but provides a useful tool for added comprehension of the Code, and helps drive home the fact that any given issue is typically addressed by several disparate sections of the Code. The illustrations are handy as an aid in quickly understanding and reviewing the material. I bought it as a study guide for an inspector exam, and found it quite useful for that purpose. I think it'll be handy in explaining the code to others, as well.

This is the best NEC companion you can buy. I have the hardback for an older version but bought the Kindle edition of the new one - I was a little worried about the Kindle edition, but I'm glad I went with it - the Kindle version is more portable (obviously) and I have found it easier to read than the printed version. Whichever version you get, this is a great reference and really helps illustrate the code.

I am working with an electrician but doing the bulk of my own wiring and this has been invaluable. It isn't a how to guide but it shows what you need to do to comply with the NEC. I still use my wiring books for wiring diagrams and instructions on technique. I especially like the clarity of the pictures. There is a lot in the book that is beyond my skill/comfort level but I like reading through that part too to get an idea of what my electrician is doing. It is well organized with a concise intro at the beginning of each chapter and a summary and quiz at the end.

Only reason this doesn’t get a 5 star review is because it’s for an outdated code book. I bought this with my updated 2017 code book and this illustrated guide is basically the same book I bought years ago with my old code book.That being said, it is informative, the illustrations are top notch, and for a visual learner like myself, I appreciate the depth in which this book goes to help you understand the code.

It is a helpful guide for an amateur to do some wiring. I do wish that in certain areas it would include some tables and more info. The illustrations are helpful in understanding the intent of the NEC.

This is a very good study guide, it is not a replacement for an actual NEC book. On a job site it is great since it is indexed by application (IE if you are doing commercial work just flip to the commercial section). if you are looking up a reference (such as notes from an inspector or on prints) it is useless unless you already know what that NEC number is.

At 26, Troost followed his wife to Kiribati, a tiny island nation in the South Pacific. Although accustomed to globe trotting, Troost and his wife, Sylvia, were truly innocents abroad when they moved to the island of Tarawa in the South Pacific, where Sylvia had accepted a government position. Tarawa is the capital of Kiribati--a republic of tiny atolls located just above the equator--and the place where Troost's dreams of paradise were shattered. Although Tarawa has much to offer, such as stultifying heat, dogged bureaucracy, toxic water, La Macarena, and the fantastic rituals of the I-Kiribati people, it lacks running water, television, restaurants, air-conditioning, and, the most crucial amenity, beer. Culture shock ensued for Maarten and Sylvia, and he chronicles their two years on Tarawa in a hilarious, sardonic travelogue. This book is notorious in the Equatorial Pacific. I spent 3 years on the island of Kiritimati, which is part of the Republic of Kiribati. I didn't read it until I had been there. If someone had told me that even half of it was true I would have said BS. But having experienced much of what he writes about, it is all true and then some. Great beach read. You can knock it out in a weekend.A belly laugh on almost every page.. Rumor is that when the Republic of Kiritimati found out that someone wrote a book about their country they thought it was wonderful.....until someone actually read it. Word is that Maarten Van Troost was sued for libel by Kiritimati. The case was thrown out because you can only libel an individual not a nation. He is supposedly now persona non grata in the Republic. You want a hilarious look at Pacific island nations this is it.

I downloaded a sample and it was funny and interesting, so I figure, what the heck. I wanted to like this book so much but only made it halfway through. He started to go into a long history of the people and the island and while I get it, I bought the book to read about his adventures. I also found his way of talking kind of condescending. He acts like he made this huge sacrifice while he grabbed onto his girlfriend's apron strings and milked her job to have his own adventure. Lame.

Well I have to admit up front that I lived from 1950 to 1969 on two of the islands mentioned in this book and that I have a smattering of 'Gilbertese' as it was known back then. I was just a boy growing up among the wonderful Gilbert and Ellice Island people and their then simple life.My rating of five stars, therefore is based on the fact I know this book to be true. I have friends living on Tarawa to this day.I saw my father in the author.My father lived on Ocean Island (now Banaba) from before the Second World War to the late fifties and I can still see him in his crisp whites going off to the office every day to work.,I can also remember the day we had the phone installed. Ours was one of the first because of his position on the phosphate commisssion staff. I can remember hand pumping water from the concrete cistern to the header tank, the rats, geckos, the mozzies the cockroaches, the spiders, climbing the enormous coconut palms with the steps cut into the trunks the I-Kiribati work gangs smoking their pandanus leaf cigarettes and paying their game of hackey sack with a square ball woven from coconut or pandanus leaves.And I have flown Air Nauru. Enough said.Perhaps this book is not for everybody but if you have ever traveled hard into remote corners of anywhere you will identify wit some of the yarns in this book and you will undoubtedly enjoy the light style in which it is written.

There's no real plot here, no through line that makes you curious what will happen next. But it is a charming account of remote island life - realistic, quirky, disease-ridden, lively. - from an outsider's point of view. It also has some interesting history about the area that will make you shake your head in shame over the way we treat this planet.

A fascinating book, often hilariously funny, sometimes disgusting and totally gross. But because it is a true account, I find myself citing the book often. Really interesting. Life on a remote tropical island is not always quite as romantic as you might imagine.... Not even close. Some of the chapters are really awful -- you learn way too much about things you hope are not true. Some are so funny you laugh out loud.

Personally, I only got as far as Hawaii, but this book about Kiribati echoes what I intuited while there. In brief: the natives are NOT happy and it is NOT paradise, at least for them! This book also captured more accurately than most the dissolute atmosphere of the South Pacific and the ennui of the place. You can't get this stuff in the official guidebooks which scream "aloha" and "paradise". This is what real life is like in this part of the world and in this part of a very large, isolating ocean. The brief section on gender relations was, to my mind, especially revealing.

This is my favorite J. Maarten Troost book. He really speaks to the escapist's heart in this one. He describes being in a mind-numbing job, feeling like he isn't truly living, so off he travels to a deserted island with his girlfriend. The entire book is sarcastic, optimistic and will make you laugh until you cry. I highly recommend this book!!

I have several books on fairies and this is by far the best. It is fun to read and informative.

Elaine Clayton expertly shares with readers the unique qualities of fairies and how they are the delicate link between earthly life (that which is physical matter) and spiritual life (that which is ethereal) and how they are subject to the same laws of nature as our humans. READ THIS BOOK to learn the difference between Angels and Fairies and to discover the many different kinds of fairies who inspire us by play and amusement which appeal to our risk taking and impulsive nature, so we may branch out into life without fear or too much self criticism. A timely look at a topic that is often misunderstood and undervalued by our scientific and spiritual communities. Well Done!

While for the most part, I have loved the “Little Bit of” series, this one gave me mixed feelings.While it does provide some good basic information, it’s what is missing that I am more concerned with. I feel this book portrays fairies as extremely friendly, helpful, benevolent creatures, and that isn’t always true.Even the chapter “Stolen by fairies” is about fairies being helpful. Not about changelings (basically you know – kidnapping) or being trapped in the realm of the fay.What Clayton does cover, she covers well:• Different types of fay such as sweet Williams fairies, imps, changelings, elves, pixies,dryads, gnomes, sylphs, nymphs, selkies, and rock people.• Elemental fairies broke down into earth, wind, water, and fire.• Seasonal with flowers, spring leaf, autumn leaf, and winter leaf fairies.• Crystal fairies.• Dawn fairies.• Twilight fairies.• Fairies of light – broken down by the colors red, blue, and yellow.In each of these categories, she breaks down what the fairy looks like, what they can do for you, and how you can attract them. Not much is provided about the damage or ill effects that can happen from encountering the listed fay.Personally, though my research is limited, I had not heard of fay such as spring leaf or autumn leaf fairies. So, this was new to me.The rest of the book covers topic such as how to travel to fairyland, attracting the fay to your home, and what it means to dream about fairies.I would like to have seen more about the dangers of the fay but this seemed to be skipped over – something that I feel should definitely be included in an introductory style book.Still a pretty book, and it looks great as part of the collection. Just remember there is more to the fay than a happy-go-lucky nature.

I asked for “Interfaith Leadership:A Primer”, by Eboo Patel as I am an interfaith chaplain and I try to keep up with the literature. I was very impressed by the book. It bears the signs of an academic book, notes, index and a list of works cited; but it is much more readable than many academic books.His explanation of “identity category” is clearer than most books I have read, and although I do not share his identification with the term “social entrepreneur” I had no trouble identifying my own using his method. I am an interfaith leader, a disAbility advocate, and a human rights advocate. I am also a wife, a Universalist, and a reader.Mr. Patel uses lots of examples as well as clear definitions and instructions.My favorite quotation is actually a paraphrase from Dr. Diana Eck. “Diversity, … , ought to be understood as a neutral term with a range of possible consequences, everything from conflict to cooperation. When diversity is proactively engaged for positive ends, Eck calls it “pluralism.” Simply put, diversity is a fact; pluralism is an achievement, one that must be worked at.” [p.54]There is so much information, direction, and inspiration in this book that I am going to recommend it to my whole house church.

"Interfaith work is not an extracurricular activity." I heard this at a meeting last week and it holds true for all people of faith. We do not equip ourselves in interfaith work as a hobby. It is essential for living in these days. Nobody teaches it better than Eboo Patel and this would be a good book for leaders and congregations of all kinds.
