Well thought out and presented, but the author makes lots of comparison to medieval war tactics, which is as foreign a concept to me as antibiotics. Wish he would have compared it to something from that last two centuries instead. I think he has a good concept nonetheless.

This book is out of print but well worth acquiring.

"King of the Jews" is a Bible background book written by a messianic Jew. While I have no doubt that the author accepts Yeshua as the promised Messiah, some of his comments seem to indicate a belief that the Law is what saves and what Jesus came to do was to call people to repent and follow the Law. I have a problem with that. On the other hand, he does believe that the New Testament is an accurate record (which I agree with).The author picked certain parables and events in the gospels that he felt he could make clearer or correct a common misinterpretation of by comparing it to related sayings by rabbis of around the same time period. Some of his explanations were, indeed, very interesting and enlightening. Sometimes he "corrected" an interpretation I'd never heard to one I already held--or held something very close to--just from reading the Bible. For some of the explanations, I couldn't follow how the points he explained related to (or cleared up) the verses in the Bible. And, finally, for some explanations, it seemed like a stretch to say they were what Jesus was actually referring to.So I found maybe a third of the book to be excellent, but the rest was confusing or something I didn't agree with. This book is better than some of the Bible background books I've read, but I've also read many that are better (like "Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus").Update: I was contacted by a woman named Tracy who told me, "D. Thomas Lancaster is not Jewish, but he is a Messianic Gentile (as I am) and we do follow Torah but not for salvation because Yeshua did and told his disciples to." The book's "about the author" didn't say one way or the other about the author being a messianic Jew, but he used terms that Messianic Jews use, so I just assumed.

A great book

I'm on my second reading of this book. It's a deep read, and if you're a Christian, it may shake up your current understanding of Yeshua (Jesus). All for good though. There's no mistaking Yeshua (Jesus) was a Jew who practiced Judaism. He was not a Christian, or any other religion. He was a Jew, period. I'm reading it a second time because it was that good. If you want to know about Yeshua, this is the book for you, whether Jew or gentile. The book gives deep reasoning and understanding as to why Yeshua would have said or did some of the things he did. Most importantly, it's about his life as a Jew and why he was called King of the Jews. The book also gives new meaning to the Brit Chadasha (New Testament). For example, most readers of the Brit Chadasha would likely believe that Yeshua was against the Pharisees, but this book explains that Yeshua was likely a Pharisee himself; therefore, with authority he was able to confront the Pharisees about their hypocrisy, or wrong-doing regarding their own practice. Yeshua never abandoned Torah, He was a Jew who lived it and honored it through and through. I have read `Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus', and while it is a good book `King of The Jews' is much more enlightening. If you believe in the G-d of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, then the Yiddish proverb on the backside of the book should enlighten any believer: "The Messiah you are expecting will never come; The Messiah that is coming you never expected". King of The Jews is a must read for anyone who wants a deeper and clearer understanding about the Jewish man named Yeshua.

well this is the book to get started with for a foundational understanding of who Yeshua is. a good read, written very well in order to understand. i just have good things to say about this book. buy it now!

It is a great book with some gems that I have not found elsewhere. The author is an amazing man. I wish I knew how many hours he has studied in his life. It would probably be more hours than I have slept in mine...

I chose this rating cause not of how the book looks or it's condition which I would give four starts to how it looks and what condition I got it in but it's where they presented this truth from. Which was kinda disappointing but still was interesting.

Coming from a social and psychological perspective, for me Storr's opening insight in this book begins with a discussion of the social origins of music and the place music had in specific cultures. Citing, as an example, Australian Aboriginals, he notes that music was used to store and pass on knowledge that was critical to survival. He notes that early music also served a collective function where music expressed 'the structure of their knowledge and social relations' (19). As well music served as a form of shared identification - they're playing our song - themes, anthems, war crys and so on. From the outset Storr draws on a diversity of material to make his point and the illustrations used in this opening chapter evidence the work that has gone into writing this book. It is also this detail that is such a delight for the reader to take in and it is really difficult to rely the pleasantness of this red without recounting each and all of the stories he recounts. And as such why for me this is a difficult review to write in a manner that captures what Storr offers here.In Ch 2 Storr begins to unpack his central theme - we can all have physical and emotional responses to music and while we may share similar responses, one person may not necessarily respond to a piece of music exactly the same as another or indeed respond to the same piece in the same way at different times in life. Our methods of perception (left/right brain alone) may mean that we take from music something that another does not. He also notes the capacity for some to empathise with a piece music while others focus on its structure and form. Similarly, a capacity to appreciate music doesn't necessarily translate into a talent for performing music. Music he notes, plays a variety of roles in health care and interestingly, the brain can process music or song in differing ways pre and post injury.Ch 3 is a tough read but he draws forth some important insights. First that music is deeply embedded in culture. The creation of specific works of music draw deeply from that culture and are unique to it. Here he draws attention to the variety of musical scales that exist and which may be unique to a given culture. He suggests that one may learn the music of another culture, just as one can learn their language, but few will be deeply grasp that which is not culturally theirs. In this chapter his also introduces another key thematic, that of the cultural imperialism of the westernised form of music, noting some perceptions of it as though it were the only true musical form.In Ch 4 he explores the idea that music in itself can express ideas without words. But at the same time poses the idea that what the composer wrote in the music, their ideas and insights may be set in a given time and space, and as such others may never perceive in the music what the composer intended. Again here he brings forth his insight about the cultural centricity or groundedness of compositions and the capacity of the listener of such creations to ever get what the other was on about. One cannot just know a composer because you have studied their music (121). Here and else where (e.g. page 129) Storr brings forth a social constructionist theme, questioning our capacity to grasp a thing in itself as distinct to our interpretation of phenomenon as they seem to us.In the ensuing chapters he takes up some more psychological themes. In Ch 5 he considers music thru the question as to whether it is an escape from reality. I am no fan of Freud and as such I found parts of this chapter overly analytical - sometimes an ink blot is just an ink blot Sigmund! Music does though, have the capacity to take us to another 'mental space' and give life satisfaction - a thematic that he draws forward now until the end of the book, noting in the end that like Neitzsche music has been 'something for the sake of which it is worthwhile to live on earth' (188). Music can be a source of comfort for those who find themselves alone, but do not wish to be so (111). Music can also be a source of solace in an otherwise alienating world (121).Ch 7 & 8 get to the heart of the question for me, the place of music in the realisation of the self - the finding and expressing of meaning in life. Here the breadth and deep of discussion, encompassing Jung, Plato and Schopenhauer (among others) is exhilarating. The experience of the aesthetic, the contemplation of beauty, abstraction, knowing ourselves, personal striving and the will to power, the satisfaction of desire and dealing with the internal hunger, the craving that the death of God means for individuals, in this case Jung and Neitzsche, something that many of us can identify with. And what is this striving about but: "becoming what one is (as) a creative act comparable with creating a work of art" (153). But it is not gooey art - it is art that embraces the fullness of life as tragedy wherein "we have moved beyond mere enjoyment of music to a condition in which we are saying yes to life as it actually is: tragic, ecstatic, painful and joyful - following Neitzche, music and art make sense of the world and justifies existence' (158).I enjoyed this book and it is one that I will read again. I can't recall what I thought I would find in this book but I was surprised and delighted by the breadth and depth of the lenses thru which he considered not just music but life as well. From his early discussions of the role of hearing in the develop of emotion thru to the difficult questions of finding meaning and satisfaction in a "tragic" world, Storr takes one on a journey. And thru his Jungian lens, he suggests that there is a sense of wholeness, of balance to be found on this journey. And when one has music in mind, I think he is saying that it is as much as what we bring to music in our yearnings, expectations, or current realities, at a given time and place in our lives, as it is as about what we take away from it that makes music so very personal. Storr recognises that music can engage us physically, emotionally, economically, environmentally, psychologically, socially, in solitude as well as isolation and spirituality. Music can meet us at the intersection of multiple perspectives and combined life experiences. For sure we can all respond to a given piece of music at some level of shared experience but fundamentally music will speak to us as who each of us is at a given moment in our life journey. Thru these multiple pathways music speaks not just to us and thru us, but also thru the expression of and/or the creation of music we too can have a say, we can express what we need to share with a wider world and we too can be a part of the creation of beauty and of the every day. Certainly life has its discords, but even within the dissonance of life harmony exists and perhaps it is within our hands to resolve the dissonance and either express a chord that resonates within, or to express a sound that for us is our enduring albeit individual statement of meaning, purpose or being.

Anthony Storr does a very good job describing the various facets of the complex interplay between music and mind. He points to the biological bases of it, explores the philosophical debates around it and gives acounts of basic music theory. He is a good writer and manages to engage the reader's interest through most of the book. That is very admirable considering the nature of the subject matter and the poor job often done by other writes venturing into similar subjects.There are however some minor flaws. The connection between the biological foundations of music and western philosophy is a difficult and dubious one and Storr does not really manage to fuse them in a smooth and comprehensive way. They stand aloof and strange to each other. Another flaw is the fact that the book heavily, though not exclusively, draws on classical western music: an admitedly very peculiar and eurocentric kind of music. This leaves out much of the richness of other kinds of music e.x. jazz, folk music, religious music. It also makes his principal endeauvour, to connect music to the mind/body, more difficult. Classical music after all epitomizes the cerebral, distanced and controlled sort of musical apprehension in contrast to folk and popular music which is more expressive and ecstatic. Had he made the opposite methodological choice, folk before classical, he might have had more succes in making the connection between music to the mind/body.Still the book is an excellent introduction to the topic.

Good shape.

This book has some interest value - but does not really get to the point and heart of why music has such an impact on our minds. It is more of a long review of other peoples' writing on this topic - mostly psychologists, sometimes turgidly long. Read Oliver Sachs as well, and get nearer to the mark.

He just lived with delusions and his own version of reality.I liked the unique names of the Jones children: California, Sedona, Dakota, and Sierra…interesting quirks that set them apart.Besides mental health issues, the story dealt with substance abuse, treatment, and recovery, and my work with clients over the years helped me connect to the stories told by those in recovery.Of course there was a bit of romance. Who wouldn’t fall for the gorgeous firefighter named Conrad (Connie) Boyle? I enjoyed the slow and gradual connection that grew between Sierra and Connie, an appropriate progression for wounded souls.Just when I was sinking into the daily drama of addiction and recovery, a stunning danger came reeling into Sierra’s life, the detritus of the messy past that Sierra had been fearing, and there were some intense moments that kept me glued to the pages…and then came that predictable yet comforting happy ending. 4.5 stars.

FINAL DECISION: Serious but not dark look at a woman who is trying to rebuild her life and the man she meets who helps her look to the future. Enjoyable and soul enriching story that focuses on hope and redemption.THE STORY: Sierra Jones has come to Sullivan's Crossing as part of the beginning of her new life. She comes to be close to her brother (Cal from WHAT WE FIND) as she works on her recovery from addiction. As she moves day to day in building a new life, she finds herself becoming part of the community and meeting Conrad (Connie) Boyle, a local firefighter with whom she begins spending time. But even as the future begins to unfold, darkness from Sierra's part threatens her future.OPINION: This is a serious and thoughtful look at a woman who is struggling to rebuild her life and the sweet man who doesn't want complicated, but can't help but be attracted to it.Sierra is a woman who is working hard to recover from her addiction. This book is unflinching in its portrayal but this isn't a downer book. Indeed, this book is about triumph and recovery and hope. I liked her as a person and I admired her determination to overcome her illness. I also admire this book for giving Sierra an addiction where there is still stigma. I can't help but cringe at reviews which complain about having a main romance character with an addiction -- as if such people are not deserving of a happy ending. I enjoyed flawed characters making their journey through the world. This book is serious, but not dark.I great deal of the lightness in this book surrounds Connie who is a gentle, giving soul. He is an uncomplicated man in that he just wants a happy ending and a family. Of course, Sierra upends those dreams but he is a good contrast to her and a great support. (Plus who can resist a sexy firefighter?)WORTH MENTIONING: This book takes a serious look at addiction and recovery.CONNECTED BOOKS: ANY DAY NOW is the second book in the Sullivan's Crossing series. While there are overlapping characters, this book reads as a complete standalone.STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

Great Book. Clear writing and very little BS. I'm reading the Kindle version, which is good for some things (like having the book always at hand),but can suffer from formatting issues. Many "pocket references" can have too little detail. This has more than I expected (which makes me wonder what the upcoming "in a nutshell" book would have that this doesn't).Take his advice and use LINQPad (free version) to try out code.

IMO, C# has evolved sufficiently that, especially when maintaining source with other programmers' idiosyncratic idioms, using out-of-date references can be counterproductive.I'm about half way thru this pocket reference.Fundamental points on which it is weak are "this" and specific implications of ":" ,where examples are provided seemingly instead of clear explanations, e.g. "Rules Within a Namespace" (pp 65-66).Referring to the authors' (also well-regarded) "Nutshell" book is not helpful, since it employs the same approach. FWIW, neither book indexes colon usage, and "Pocket Reference" does not index CLR, Common Language Runtime (page 20).Bottom line: this seems a good portable hard copy up-to-date quick reference.For more/different help, Microsoft's online docs work.

Unusually clear for a pocket guide. Most are so terse that, even if they include all features of a language, become opaque and unhelpful. This one really communicates without becoming overlong. An impressive accomplishment, particularly for a fairly complex language like C#.

This is one of my favorite serials ever. It’s sexy, sassy, funny and dark.This serial belongs to the dark and brooding Sean Ferro. He’s the first Ferro I was introduced to, and he holds a piece of my heart. As the series start out, Sean is very mysterious, and to be honest – 15 volumes in (when I’m writing this review), he still is a bit of an enigma. There is still a lot to be learned. He’s a dark SOB, this one. He’s got his fetishes, but holy wow is he delicious. And scary. Seriously, I love him – but if I had known him IRL I would have been scared s***less, and kept my distance.Then we have Avery. This girl’s got some spunk. I mean she has to, given that Sean is her love interest. She’s a struggling student when we first meet her, and when her best friend, Mel, realizes this, she reveals what her REAL job is. She’s a high dollar call girl. Ms. Black latches on to Avery immediately, and if Avery just takes one client, it could solve all her problems. She only has to say yes. Problem is she only wants one guy, Sean. Enter: a s***load of trouble.“I’m rewarded, uh, I mean punished, with a slap to my backside.” - AveryThis is an erotic romance, and you can expect some mighty steamy scenes. Some of the volumes more so than others, because there is a hell of a lot going on in this series. The Arrangement, and Sean basically, was the catalyst for all the other books from this same world. Sean has made an appearance is in every spin-off so far. So this is obviously a great place to start if you are curious about H.M. Ward’s books. Just remember to start at the beginning. You would not understand half of what’s going on if you jumped into it halfway through.It’s important to note that this is a fan driven series. Essentially that means that as long as the fans want more, there will be more. And I honestly can’t picture the day we won’t want more. So if that is not for you, I recommend you go pick up something else, because this story has been going on for a good while now, and I certainly hope it will go on for a long time to come – as long as Holly wants it to.Another important note is that these are split up in volumes, and each one end on a cliffhanger (Holly is the queen of cliffhangers). It’s nerve-wracking every time. And it is one of the tings that keep it just as exciting as it was in the beginning. As well as the fact that they’re always fast paced, and it never gets boring. Each volume starts off exactly where the last one left off. I always like to re-read the latest volume before the next one releases because you really get thrown right back into the action without any recaps. It really is kind of built like a TV-show, which is so awesome, because something like that is currently in the works! *fangirls* Just Imagine seeing THE Sean Ferro on screen…

I can tell that I am going to have a love/hate relationship with this series. Avery is pretty consistent in her personality. She is broken and is fearful of losing her scholarship and then living in a cardboard box until she is no more. She is trying to get both her undergraduate and graduate degrees under the same scholarship requirements. It looks like no one helps her to find alternatives in the scholarship area or her minimum wage job. She's in NYC and should be able to get a commission based job that would pay a lot more. Oh well, I am not writing this novel...er chapter.In this CHAPTER, Avery and Sean finally have great sex together. At least Sean knows what he is doing in that area. but then he just leaves. Talk about running hot and cold! He is one mixed up guy. She really needs a Mother or Mel to tell her that he is too mixed up and broken, perhaps worse than she is. That does not make for a happy ending.On to CHAPTER 3

**4.5 Stars**Oh the anticipation! Both Avery and Sean are harboring secrets from one another. Avery needs this job and she wants Sean but feels she shouldn't. Sean apparently feels the same way about wanting Avery. And then there's this darned arrangement between them...This second installment definitely ratcheted up the tension. The will they or won't they, the fun they share getting to know one another, and the remorse and guilt coupled with the lust they feel for one another, it all made for tension so thick you could almost cut it. However, none of my questions were answered.I still don't know who Sean Ferro really is or what deep, dark secrets he hides that send him to a place where he buys his dates. I'm also beginning to wonder if there's more about Avery that I don't yet know. And it's all so compelling.Ward does an excellent job of doling out information and excitement in small enough doses to keep me riveted. I hope once all is revealed that it's worth the price tag because at $3/novella, times 16, it's a pricey, yet irresistible serial.
