About the Author
Michael Chertoff was the second Secretary of Homeland Security from 2005–2009. He previously served at a United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, as a federal prosecutor, as Assistant U.S. Attorney General, and as United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey―one of only two U.S. Attorneys who was not replaced when the Clinton administration took office in 1993. Chertoff is the author of Homeland Security: Assessing the First Five Years. He is today Executive Chairman and Co-founder of The Chertoff Group, a security consulting company, and senior of counsel to the firm of Covington and Burling.

The book would have been a 5 star review if the author had informed me about the steps I can take to protect my "digital exhaust" from exploitation by toxic actors. If anything, the book serves to make excuses for government sanctioned abuse and the resulting private abuse of previously private information. Rather than being an advocate of locking down our data, he encourages continued abuse under the promise that future access will only result in positive outcomes--a clearly naive view of the credibility of government and corporate actors.
Interesting, informative, and creepy all at the same time - from an expert who knows his stuff

The data revolution has transformed economics, commerce, society, physical systems and security. It's overdue for a legal revolution. The book is more about dangers than utility of big data and communication. The trade-off between security and freedom predates big data, but now it's become much more complex than a simple privacy issue. Chertoff describes Orwellian big brother watching us along with hacking, theft, terrorism and targeted advertising. There is interesting history of Internet development along with a smattering of technology and some judicial case summaries. However, liberty is about more than government surveillance. Advice on self protection is pretty mundane; change passwords and guard against phishing.Chertoff considers that coercing companies into building in back doors at the service of the government would be a breach of freedom and confidence. He thinks that regulation of communication service is a similar loss of liberty. For conducting cyber warfare, he describes well the trade-off between deterrence and active response.The conclusion contains a bit of wishful thinking in recommending law and policy that we citizens develop laws enabling control of our own internet. Surprisingly, or perhaps intentionally, he doesn't tell us about cooperation between industry and government on security technology. I would give this 5 stars if it wasn't for suspicion that a lot is missing.

In his aptly titled book Exploding Data, former Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff discusses how the similarly massive, yet just as poorly understood, expansion of information has already become the dominating trend of the modern world. The issues he raises are timely, chilling, and complicated.Chertoff details what many have heard but few have thoughtfully examined: how every second of every day produces immense amounts of personal data, most of which could never have been collected much less recorded a few years ago, that is then captured, catalogued, and acted upon by commercial interests, governments, and enemies both foreign and domestic. Many might be frightened to hear that our browsing habits, energy usage, travel plans, daily routines, health factors, driving style, and private conversations are being analyzed, leveraged, and sold on legal markets today. Armed with these trillions of insights, artificial intelligence can create uncanny yet accurate predictions for the most complicated mechanics of human behavior.Exploding Data provides an excellent framework to view this new data revolution by looking back at the similar societal disruptions of recording devices, cameras, and telephones. As these new technologies proliferated, the American legal system created doctrines like the expectation of privacy in order to protect the rights of individuals from undesirable overreach. Chertoff convincingly argues that the system is overdue for a recalibration.Straight, simple, and to the point, this book methodically and intelligently discusses an issue so broad that it almost defies comprehension. In its concluding chapters, Chertoff argues for increased cooperation between nations, companies, and regulators to secure a safe and fair information system. But in the aftermath of this explosion, with fragments of people increasingly siloed by sorting algorithms, order will not come easily.
