This book is boring as sin (i.e. a colloquial phrase that means its the most boring thing I've ever read). Even its new edition is like forcing yourself to watch paint dry in an agonizing form that is never ending. I pity those that are forced to read this. To someone who isn't completely new to IT, it is incredibly boring with most chapters in the book. I think the book was actually extended purposefully to fill pages because of how the writing isn't condensed at all. It also has unnecessary graphics, tables, etc covering numerous pages. The processes it lists ranging from planning to implementing a plan and defending against attacks seem to be scaled for a large corporation and not really a small business. Most of the stuff I knew already but, as far as knowing all of these different acronyms for aspects of a business, I highly doubt anyone uses the entirety of the terms in this book in a business setting.

Whoa. This book was incredibly sleep-inducing. Every time I would begin reading, all I wanted to do was lay my head down on the desk. At an extremely high velocity. Again and again.All in all, I think the book has a lot of useful information. Some chapters were actually pretty interesting. Unfortunately, the usefulness of the information is a bit lost amongst the efforts your brain makes while reading to simply continue functioning. To say the reading is dry would be an understatement; it's more like a Texas drought where the ground cracks open and cows fall in. I know this doesn't have to be, as my Authorized Cert Guide for CompTIA Security+ by David Prowse is actually quite interesting and he has a sense of humor, so you know it's a real person writing it. The layout makes a difference as well. I know that paper is not quite so scarce that we can't spread the words out a bit and put in some bullets or paragraph breaks, rather than pages and pages of solid text. Bleh. Ain't nobody got time for that.So, if you must get this book as a requirement, take heart - the semester will end. Until then, take frequent breaks, drink plenty of water, and just do your best to stay awake.

Although some information was interesting in here, it delivered it in a poorly-written way. There was some new stuff I didn't cover in previous classes, but I feel that I had to comb over The Great Wall of Text to get to the point. Moreover, this book is MOSTLY the Management side of InfoSec, not so much the Hacking side. It only briefly covers on the highly-technical details, whereas it loads you mostly with Best Practices and the like.Tells you what tools Cybersecurity uses, but doesn't really give any examples of HOW to use them. Does, however, give some decent Security Architecture tips, but it doesn't really cover anything about configuration and such.If it had fewer metric tonnes of fluff, perhaps it could have gotten a 3 or even 4, but it took what I thought was going to be the most interesting of my courses and made it the most obnoxious.

My teacher assigned this book for our class and it is one of the hardest and driest books to read. I feel like every chapter is the same and I am reading a slightly different versions of chapter one. To top it off I have to take a quiz on the information. Even the powerpoints that accompany the book are 55 slides or more.I think this book suffers mainly from lazy writing and lazy editing. If this book had been properly edited it would have been a third of the size that it is and the student would walk away with the meat of the subject instead of a little meat and a whole lot of fat.

Buyer beware. I rented the Kindle version for my class. The punchline is that it doesn't work on my Kindle, not supported? Only works on some androids as an app (not all) and will not work on Kindle Cloud. Also doesn't work on Win 8 app version of Kindle, but will as the PC (Win 7) version of the Kindle application. Confused yet? Pathetic in my opinion. A kindle version only partially supported by Amazon. I asked their help desk on 2 different times and they only replied that the author would authorize? Why would that even be close to a real reason - Kindle versions should not be constrained even on Amazon's own native devices.As for the book - it's dry. It is about internet security so making it an exciting read would be a stretch. I didn't rent it to entertain myself, it was a required read for a class. I gave it 3 stars only because the author allowed it to be rented by students which is a huge help considering tuition costs.

The book was a requirement for a Information Security class. It needs updating and better layout but the price is nice for a textbook. Overall I found the class too easy and this book is for someone new to information security. I was expecting a more in-depth class as it being a 300 level class but was disappointed. The book is all black and white and doesn't even offer margins to write in notes. Again the price is nice but my copy arrived where the pages looked faded. I don't think this was unique to my copy but how the book is mass produced.

If you have the opportunity to read this book while not enrolled in college, you'll appreciated it even more! The first four chapters might not be your cup of tea if you just care about firewalls, IDS, IDPS, VPNs, and encryption, but if you are a scholar and interested in security principles as a whole, get this book. Get the Kindle version if you can. I have the paper back and I wish I had the digital version, too!

This is the best book I've found to study the foundations of Information Security. It is a must read for anyone preparing for the CISSP exam. The information is presented logically and explained thoroughly. I also recommend "Security+ Guide to Network Security Fundamentals" by the same publisher.

Like Gary Schmidt in William Bradford (Eerdmans, 1999), Doherty quotes extensively from Bradford's own history, Of Plymouth Plantation. He obviously has a great deal of respect and admiration for Bradford, but is careful to point out weaknesses and treats potentially controversial incidents evenhandedly. Some actions that might seem particularly startling to modern readers (bringing back the head of Wituwamat to display in the settlement) are placed in historical context (English colonists would have seen heads decorating Tower Bridge in London). This is a clear and thoughtful presentation of Bradford's life and of the Pilgrims' settlement in the New World. The book has fewer illustrations than Schmidt's title, and they're primarily paintings of imagined scenes and a few more or less contemporary prints. I love this true and accurate account of the early pilgrims, who suffered and sacrificed so much to lay the ground work for the founding of America. The book looks brand new and it’s sad it was “decommissioned” from a public school just because it teaches about the foundations of this country...Faith in God and the importance of following Gods laws to estabilsh a free and prosperous people!!

When I found out I am related to William Bradford I had to find out more about him. This is a great history book. Highly recommended.

This is truly a book that every American should read. It tells in a marvelous readable style the true story of one of our greatest American heroes. The Pilgrim story is one that has been relegated in its importance in our revisionist history books, especially in our public schools. Knowing our true history and giving honor to our heroes is vital to our strength as a nation. This book accomplishes these goals.

Sigerman, who has written insightfully about women in such books as Women in the American West (1998), now turns her attention to a pioneer of the women's rights movement in this volume in the Oxford Portraits series. Using primary sources (but providing no notes), she looks at the life of Stanton, who came out for birth control, voting rights, and changes in the divorce laws before any of these ideas were popular or, for that matter, even feasible. Sigerman follows Stanton from childhood, when she was first awakened to injustice, through adult life, during which she found a like-minded reformer to marry (and bore him seven children) and made a career as a crusader whose causes also included child labor and abolition. At first glance, the book's format seems a little gray; the typeface is small; and the black-and-white pictures seem a shade overexposed. Readers who look more closely, however, will find a wealth of interesting documents, including original newspaper articles, cartoons, lithographs, and photos. Great book,great pictures,variety of projects. Stock work, refinishing metal, trigger work, jeweling, filing, hand tools, machine tool basics drill press, grinder, polisher, Dremel tool, tips, must haves. The author and his son truly enjoy this type of hands on work and it shows! Outstanding color photography. An neat and tidy work shop, layed-out well and improved upon with years of doing! I've included some pictures of a few of my gunsmithing upgrades.

I don't think I can add much to what has already been said, other than Gunsmithing Made Easy is a good book of projects almost any enthusiast would find useful. Some are very easy, like cleaning a bore to improve accuracy and some are more difficult, like fitting a short chambered barrel with handtools and not so expensive precision measuring tools. The language is concise and easy to follow, the supporting photography is excellent in quality and appropriate in support of instructions.If I were to take exception and pick nits - I'd say bore cleaning isn't really gunsmithing and there are too many other sources that define this task and are free of charge. The second nit is the coverage of Ruger single action trigger repair. I thought the task was too unique to be included and the equipment used was more appropriate for a commercial shop. Like I said, nits. The book is inexpensive and the balance of the material was excellent.

The book spends more time on long guns than handguns but is an easy and enjoyable read. I liked Mr. Towsley's style and the way he mixed in a few stories as he passed along lessons from his many years of gunsmithing.

After years away from firearms (military), I'm slowly getting back into the sport. I was looking for a good, grounded book that would give me ideas and suggestions on the right way to do things - the right tools to use, the right environment, etc. I was also looking for something that was easy to read and follow - something I could start reading, take a break for a few days (schedule demands not laziness) and come back to it. The writing style is perfect for that - and no nonsense right to the point. While this book won't make you a master gunsmith, it will take you up a few notches if you're relatively new like me, or a hobbyist. Highly recommended.

I bought this book on Kindle - that was a big mistake. I really should have thought that part out before purchasing it. It would have been "okay" if I had it in book form, but it is still a very basic book. It spends a lot of time on setting up your workshop, buying tools, etc. that I'm sure would be helpful for some people, and it is written well. Other than that, it does go over the skills necessary for basic gunsmithing, but just not more than an "okay" rating for me and my skill level. Your mileage may vary.

I've been shooting a while, but putting tools to my own guns has been something I've been reluctant to do, but as I shoot more. So I bought this looking for a sort of general intro to the basics.This book offers chapters, each a project the author shows you - like glass-bedding a rifle in one chapter, and a number of other useful projects - recoil pad installation, etc.What I got from it was a good look at what the rifle looks like dissasembled, which gave me the guts to take apart my rifle and make some minor trigger adjustments with the confidence that I could take it down and put it back together - and an understanding of how those parts related.I think that the book could use a few more photos but overall, it's a good introduction and his emphasis on safety and using the right tool for the job should get most off on the right foot.

I just got this book, but looking through it looks like what I expected from Mr. Towsley. I have several of his books an they go into a lot of detail and he explains it very well. I'm not a gunsmith, but this book should take me in the path I need to go if I ever have a gun functioning problem.

The phrase in the title of this review is a quote from the second chapter of this book and epitomizes the practical, wise and accessible approach of the author.No book can be all things to all people, and a book on home gun smithing will necessarily reflect the types of guns the author already has in his collection. Though there is a great deal in this book that is generally useful, its primary focus is on bolt action rifles. Likewise, the audience of this book is people familiar with tools and generally familiar with firearms but with zero experience doing their own gun smithing.Understanding its focus and audience, then, this book is absolutely fabulous, and I consider it to be one of the best in its genre.This book is filled with the sort of information that helps you short-cut the experience curve by learning from the author's experience rather than your own. Having learned some of the material in this book the hard way, I can really appreciate the value of what the author is offering.I do a considerable amount of home gun smithing on a wide array of rifles, but there are some things I haven't done, such as shortened and re-crowned barrels, because I lack equipment such as lathes. This book explains precisely how to accomplish these tasks without lathes!He starts at the very beginning by explaining not just what tools you need, but why you need them and how they are used. He also includes a number of excellent tips won from his experience, such as using rosin to hold a barrel in a barrel vise. This book goes from basics such as installing recoil pads all the way through building a custom rifle using a short-chambered barrel and an in-the-white action. Along the way, he covers Duracoat finishing, glass and pillar bedding, trigger work, rifle maintenance, how to choose used rifles and more. This is all painstakingly documented with excellent (and I mean excellent) photos.Will this book turn you into a superb gunsmith overnight? No. Mastery of any field takes about 10,000 hours of work, and no book can give you that. But this book will get the beginner off to a great start while helping to avoid common pitfalls. Safety (both gun safety and shop safety) are stressed throughout.This is a great book and I highly recommend it for those interested in maintaining and enhancing their own rifles or rehabilitating old rifles.

I am making a quilt for my cousin with leftover fabrics from her mom. Her mom was a quilter; she made a quilt for my daughter when she was born. Our grandmother also quilted. See? Mary and I have a lot in common; we come from a family of quilters. I am hopeful this pattern will work with various sized scraps. Not too much commitment from any piece of fabric. Just need a minimum of 4 squares.I read all Mary’s suggestions for choosing fabrics and pared down my original selection. I kept with the blue and red material. I may branch out if I run short. Not sure what colours I will make the rolling stone blocks.Here are my sample blocks. I am in love with this quilt. The instructions are clear, if Mary has suggested a way to do something she always references back to the instruction and page number, and the numbers are correct; love that. I am enthused! Cut all the fabric!I am paring down the size of the quilt for my cousin. Most of the quilts in this book are queen or king size. As Mary says these quilts are a commitment and you will not be able to finish them in a weekend. That is okay! I am savouring the journey. Each step of the process is to be celebrated and enjoyed. “Quilters are impatient people” but we do love each part of the quilt making process.As I sew up this quilt I remember the strong wonderful women in my family, the pioneer women who created quilts that were utilitarian and beautiful, and the new generation of quilters starting out. My cousin will be able to wrap herself in this quilt and feel all the love I have for her. I really enjoyed reading this book. I purchased it primarily because Mary Fons will be teaching 3 quilting classes I will be attending and this book is required. The writing is easy to read and flows nicely. I cannot say how great the quilt directions are as I do not take the class until mid. Aug. 2014, so I will update this review then. However, in looking over the instructions, I will say that based on similar designs, I have seen easier ways to cut and sew, but I want to see what she does in the class before I make a definitive claim here.The book contains instructions for 12 different scrap quilts that all look interesting, and I plan to make some of those that will not be covered in the class I am taking. The color pictures are really lovely, and they show off the quilts quite well. The book includes many close-up pictures of the fabric and the quilting, which I particularly like, and Mary also includes pictures of the back of each quilt.The first 35 pages (4-38) deal with what she calls "Theory and Practice" that are great for beginners and helpful reminders for experienced quilters. All the quilts in the books are for queen and king sized beds. As she warns in the beginning, these quilts "will stubbornly refuse to be finished in a day."

I love this book so much that I can't shelve it! I have read it cover to cover, re-read bits and pieces or Mary Fons' writing, admired and coveted after the quilts inside, and finally decided I'm making each quilt in the book when I couldn't decide on just one! This is one of those books that you can really READ! It's not dry and boring, but fun and spritely! I love it! I can't say enough how much I love this book! I can't wait to try my hand at these great quilts to make love under . . . ;-)

This book is amazing. Great pictures, detailed instructions. Every quilt is beautiful and it makes you want to grab your fabric and start making a beautiful quilt. I can honestly say that I loved every quilt and personally planning on making every quilt in the book! Great job Mary thank you for a fantastic book that every quilter should own.

I was so excited to order this book, and it did not disappoint! I love love love Mary Fons' writing style. I have quite a few quilting books, but this is the first that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. I appreciated the descriptions of her inspiration for making these beautiful quilts, and I even learned a couple of quilt construction tips I didn't know. I had never even considered making a bed-sized quilt before, but this book has made me want to get to my machine right now and make a beautiful quilt for my bed that my husband and I can cherish! One more quick thought: I appreciated that many of the quilts aren't feminine looking it can be hard to find quilt patterns that will appeal to both men and women, but this book is full of them!

I'm a young quilter, though I have been quilting for a long time. Initially I checked this book out from the library - then decided it needed to be part of my own personal library. I like these patterns a lot, and Mary's general philosophy of quilting. I also prefer making big quilts that can be used on beds (all of the patterns are for bed-sized quilts), and the styling and photography is fresh and interesting. I hope to make a few of these soon, but in the meantime, the book will be good inspiration to flip through.

The information provided by Mary Fons is valuable for every level of quilter. This book is well written and well organized. I will refer to it often. I am a traditional quilter but I found many of the quilt projects adaptable for traditional quilting styles.

Love this book! And I'm speaking as someone who reads a lot of quilting books. There are so many books out there, yet Mary offers a fresh perspective that I haven't read elsewhere. The projects are gorgeous and I have several on my wish list already. In addition, she gets book basics right - great pics of the entire quilt, the entire back, and the quilt in use. Why doesn't everyone do this? Mary loves quiltmaking and quilters + is a true expert in the field. I am very happy with the purchase!

After seeing Mary Fons at a local guild meeting...had to have this book. It is as delightful as she is! I have only read it so far...but really want to make the quilt "Whisper". Glad I purchased.
