What a great book cover! I picked it up for that reason alone. Lyndall Gordon's book is an examination of five female authors who, in her estimation, "changed the world." The five are: Mary Shelley, Emily Bronte, Virginia Woolf, George Eliot and Olive Schreiner. You've probably heard of the first four, the fifth I hadn't ever heard of. She categorizes them as Prodigy (Shelley), Visionary (Bronte), Outlaw (Eliot), Explorer (Woolf) and Orator (Schreiner).As the publisher of this work is John Hopkins University Press, I'm assuming this book is an outgrowth of a dissertation or lecture series. The writing, while colorful, carries all the hallmarks of this genre. While readable, the text definitely has academic purpose. The reader should be conversant with the women's works, or else you might be lost; the author assumes the reader is familiar with them. From chapter to chapter, the author links the authors through some characteristic, life event or literary mentorship. In a popular work of nonfiction, I don't think these links would even be necessary.All in all, read this book for its portraits of these writers as women who defied the conventions of their time and worlds. Whether you're familiar with their books or not, you can admire the conviction and courage it took to live unconventional lives that placed them outside the bounds of acceptable society.

I began reading this book hoping for a comparative biography of five groundbreaking women authors who had defied the shackles of their rigid societies and found ways to thrive through reading and writing. I suppose I got most of that but not quite in the way I was expecting.This reads like a textbook or series of connected essays. Each of the women’s stories is covered thoroughly and biographical elements are fleshed out in thorough detail. But the focus is on how each of them, in their own ways, rejected the norms of the society and times they were living in and embraced their outsider status. For some, this was a conscious decision while others were more-or-less reacting to circumstances. Throughout the book there is a strong streak of feminism, especially for the later authors who lived through the beginnings of the women’s suffragist movement.I was happy with the content that the author delivered. I am less enthusiastic about the style. This is not an easy read and I frequently found myself re-reading paragraphs to make sure I understood the material. At times I felt like I was reading this as part of a graduate-level course on Literature or Women’s Studies. Given the author’s background and status as a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and a fellow of St. Hilda’s College in Oxford, this is hardly surprising. In the end, I would have preferred a more grounded biography and less of an academic approach.

Gordon offers some interesting biographies of five women writers who advanced the feminist movement. She progresses through time, from Mary Shelley to Virginia Woolf. I love the way she ties the women together by showing how earlier writers influenced the views of the younger writers.Each biography stands well on its own. I’ve read longer or shorter bios of Shelley, Bronte and Woolf. I did get a bit of feeling that Gordon was perhaps trying to present these women in a specific light, generally that conveyed by the title of each chapter:1) Prodigy – Mary Shelley2) Visionary – Emily Bronte3) ‘Outlaw’ – George Eliot4) Orator – Olive Schreiner5) Explorer – Virginia WoolfThis book does focus much more on the author herself and what influenced her viewpoints and her writing, than on the writing itself. This is not a literature review by any means, but it’s not presented that way.Overall, a worthwhile read for those interested in feminism as well as those with an interest in any of these authors. The influences between the authors are quite interesting. These authors were very different in some ways, but they had intertwined, or even the same, longterm goals. I found the way that their different worldviews influenced their choices quite interesting.But that’s JustMe.

In the past, women who ventured beyond the accepted boundaries became outsiders, whether they wanted to be or not. In Outsiders, Lyndall Gordon examines the careers of five women who were outsiders in their societies, and how they paved the way for others. Like many who read this book, I knew four of the writers, but was not familiar with Olive Schreiner. The five were outsiders in more than their aspirations and accomplishments. Some refused to wear corsets, others made friends with "unsuitable" people. They all grew up without a mother. All wrote books that transcended the safe space of "women's novels," nd experimented with style and genre. At times the book is academic and ponderous, but then it picks up speed and sprinkles in some fascinating tidbits or sparkling analysis. Well worth a look for a fresh take on five renegade writers.

Lyndall Gordon describes the private lives and professional careers of five prominent women writers. She highlights many of the similarities between the lives and works of these authors even though they were from different generations. Gordon’s book stimulates an interest in the writings of the authors she chronicles. Gordon’s own writing style, however, is distracting. Her abrupt transitions often make it difficult to follow to whom she is referring. The lack of a smooth flowing narrative creates a jumble of facts and observations. Most disappointing is the failure of Gordon to explicitly address the claim of the book’s subtitle and describe how these women changed the world. Gordon tells of the women’s accomplishments but not of their impact. Gordon’s portraits do provide readers with examples of courageous women who dared to live authentic lives and, as a result, were compelled by society to live as outsiders.

This is an interesting concept. A death bed promise made by a grieving husband and a best friend, to marry each other. After the funeral the husband took the baby son and went to stay in another community with his family for awhile.The best friend, Greta, continued life ad it had been, but always wondering if she and Isaac would follow through with the promise. Meanwhile, the young man working her father's farm land is showing interest in her.I am looking forward to continuing this story to see the outcome. I am not sure that I would be able to fulfill such a promise, knowing the other didn't feel love.

What happened? I knew I should have read the reviews. It was only because of my bad habit of checking the back of the book after getting a little bit into it that I discovered this is a serial story. The nice thing about Kindle books is that you don't have to wait until you can get out to get the new one, but it has discouraged me from finishing or continuing on in the series. The story has potential though if you don't mind this story form.

I can't imagine having to make such a promise as Naomi and Issac did before Betty died. But, the love Naomi has for the baby, hopefully the marriage will work out. I am looking forward to reading the next book

Good story. Beautiful writing. But the book stops and you have to buy more story. I won't purchase any more from this author. I'm looking for a complete book. I feel cheated by the author.

Greta is tested in this book in the trilogy. The grace with which she handles life's ups and Downs is an inspiration. It is a part of me that I need to develop!

Book 2 leaves you wondering if it will happen. Problem is, I like the other guy! Gee! It isn't open ended. I am off to read the next one.

Really enjoyed reading about the characters and the storyline. Held my interest throughout the book. Look forward to more by this author.

This ‘doctrine of abrogation’ allowed Mohammad to rewrite earlier prophet’s “incorrect teachings” like the 10 Commandments, revise Biblical events so Jesus was not crucified or rise from the dead, you have no savior, the Jews were not God’s chosen people, Abraham and his beloved son Ishmael lived in Arabia and built the Ka’aba to worship the moon god Allah and put the ‘black stone that fell fell from heaven’ there. Never having read the Bible and having been born 2,000 or 500 years after the events put Mohammad in a perfect position to correct the eyewitnesses. Glen covers most of this, showing how the “peace and love” parts of the early revelations were abrogated by the later kill or enslave all who do not bow the knee to Mohammad (oh, and Allah too) once Mohammad got enough followers to form a small army and terrorize more into being converts. He gives advice. Understand the enemy. Be unafraid to speak. Understand your own traditions. Only Muslims can reform Islam.

Almost, but not quite, too detailed for me to understand. All the Arabic names become like a foreign language, hence unreadable. But I learned a large amount of hitherto unknown information, and grateful I am for that. It only cements the conclusion to which I was beginning to arrive on my own, that Islam/Islamism is not a religion, but a form of government and very dangerous. I appreciated the notes used, the research undertaken, and the orderly way Mr. Beck presented the entire format. Very well done. Will read more about this new "ism". And will read the book several more times to more clearly understand it.

Just finished this eye-opening book. More Americans should read it and get educated about the threat we face today, rather than rely on the lies and politically correct platitudes that our leaders and those of the Islamic world, would have us believe. However, I expect Americans will bury their heads in the sand and refuse to confront the truth, until it is too late. Why is it so hard to understand the motives and desires of the Islamists when the Koran and their leaders lay it out very clearly? You don't have to believe Glenn Beck or others, just read Islam's holy books and look at the actions of its founder! And why are so many so eager to come to Islam's defense when it's teachings are counter to basic freedom, justice, and equality?

Extraordinary look into what has been a taboo subject for those that live in fear of a religion that has set out deter anyone that looks to write, infiltrate the DNA of the rise of Islam around the world. Unfortunately for the citizens of the U.S., neither of the last two administrations understood what was clear even in the early history of our country (Jefferson), that those that do not capitulate to Islam will be condemned as kafir and we will come under constant and persistent attack from a culture promulgated by hate and fear. This book, for me, though very informative only allowed for a window into what I already knew about the current world conditions, the core of Islamists, their ultimate design on their caliphate and how it effects this country.

A needed look at Islam. I don't believe there is a political or military solution to the violence perpetrated by those who are following to the letter the example of their prophet. It is a spiritual problem and the answer is spiritual and found in Christ. That may not be a politically correct statement but if one is serious about God then look at the evidence for the resurection. The evidence will not replace a need for an experience and faith in Christ but will point one in the direction of asking and receiving if one is honestly seeking. Peace be to you.

It is a nice quick reference guide on the importance of belief, to the devout, using significant sources that are respected by the community it references. Easy to read as both a guide and a primer of the influences of the cultures, countries, and Islamist driven antagonists throughout the Umma. When attempting to read this, or any Glenn Beck book, it’s best to remember his standing challenge, “Do your own homework.” Generally this book starts you on that path.Unfortunately, I have one lingering criticism: citation weirdness. His references are generally unbroken links to articles online. However, my biggest criticism it his style of citation. While perfectly suited for an e-book, his dismissal of citation standards such as parenthetical or numerical types make quick referral to his sources impossible. He doesn’t clearly cite sources for statements or assertions beyond that of direct quotes. This makes it difficult to understand where he gets his info unless he includes the citation within the text.

Displeased with this purchase. Simple book to read. Misleading in all its aspects especially the Lies in Islam section. Most of it has been shortened to have a tailored explanation. Book is obviously written by an Islam hater, and not someone who is mutual or someone trying to learn. Simple research or reading on with other sources would easy discredit most of this book.

As I mentioned in another review of book in this series (N Fla. and Panhandle), the Cape Cod book is much better at planning a really great trip, advising of fantabulous food stops, using the ferries to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard....I didn't realize the authors were different in this series.....

Leaving for this area in a month and this book has given so much history and places to go and visit. Great guide for anyone visiting the area. It won't disappoint!

We had difficulty finding things, sometimes information for an attraction seemed out of place in the chapter. However, we did use the book a lot.

This book provided great information for getting around and seeing the sights in both Charleston and Savannah. It was an invaluable reference for a great vacation.

Lots of written material but not enough pictures describing what they r talking about.

While it's true that this guide doesn't contain colorful pictures (there are other guides that do that), it is well-written by someone who knows the area well. It is divided into sections for easy referencing, and the entries are supported by great detail. The author knows her stuff. I have consulted this guide repeatedly while planning my upcoming trip to Charleston.

The book covers a lot of material if you take into account the entire region represented...as a result, it will only have so much material before it resembles an encyclopedia. Having said that, Ms. McMillan does a credible job covering the basics, which may be sufficient for the casual observer. While I do recommend the latest edition of this book, if you plan to make a trip to Charleston or Savannah, I suggest getting an additional travel book or two to supplement this one.
