Review

To refer to this volume as just a translation is misleading, because Smith and Trzaskoma have provided much more, most notably the best short introduction to ancient mythography--and these particular authors--available in English. . . . The translations themselves are clear and accurate. [An] admirable volume. Smith and Trzaskoma are to be commended. --Kris Fletcher, Bryn Mawr Classical ReviewEvery student and scholar of Greek mythology and the mythographic tradition will want to own this book, and every library should have it on the shelf. Smith and Trzaskoma have produced an indispensable volume that is easy to use and understand. They have invested a tremendous amount of time and scholarship to make this a valuable resource for traditionalists and non-traditionalists alike. Even the general reader can benefit from their judicious essays, thoughtful translations, and concise textual notes. Teachers of mythology will welcome this handbook for its readability and applicability to general mythology books currently in use. Everything about this work will make it the standard handbook for years to come. --Paul Properzio, The Classical JournalThese two translations are excellent, finding a good balance of accuracy and readability. . . . the Apollodorus, which has a few relatively recent competitors, adopts a style that will be much more welcome to readers than other renderings currently available. The translation of the Fabulae will be especially welcome for teaching, since it is difficult to find this in a readable English version. The General Introduction strikes a balance--both informed and informal--that will appeal to instructors and students. There is certainly nowhere else one can go to find such a succinct yet thorough discussion of these major Greek mythographers. . . the discussion remains readable, focused, and pleasantly informal. The maps and genealogical charts are excellent and useful. . . these charts create something truly useful for student readers. --Daniel W. Berman, Pennsylvania State University

From the Back Cover

By offering, for the first time in a single edition, complete English translations of Apollodorus' Library and Hyginus' Fabulae -- the two most important surviving "handbooks" of classical mythography -- this volume enables readers to compare the two's versions of the most important Greek and Roman myths. A General Introduction sets the Library and Fabulae into the wider context of ancient mythography; introductions to each text discuss in greater detail issues of authorship, aim, and influence. A general index, an index of people and geographic locations, and an index of authors and works cited by the mythographers are also included. "These two translations are excellent, finding a good balance of accuracy and readability. . . . the Apollodorus, which has a few relatively recent competitors, adopts a style that will be much more welcome to readers than other renderings currently available. The translation of the Fabulae will be especially welcome for teaching, since it is difficult to find this in a readable English version. Berman, Pennsylvania State University "The Introduction is exceptionally well written, enormously informative, and a pleasure to read. It is written in a conversational but elegant style, and is clearly addressed to an audience of students and enthusiastic amateurs."--Monica Cyrino, University of New Mexico

Great!

Great introduction and VERY helpful- don't skip over it. Kind of hard to figure out how the footnote system works. Authors did a great job putting all the material/translations together.

this is a phenomenal book, very goog paper and diagramation, very good notes and sources. very interesting resource for the mythological searcher

Greeks and Romans had an extensive mythology. It was used in poetry, hymns, plays, allusions in histories and, of course, art. Even they had trouble keeping track of all the contradictory material so handbooks were produced to summarise the various mythological cycles. Apollodorus (who ever he was) wrote in Greek some time between the 1st century BC to the 2nd century AD and Hyginus wrote in Latin some time in the 1st century AD. As the Greeks and Romans became Christians they felt the need to preserve these texts to help them understand other pagan works like the Illiad and the Aeneid.Apollodorus called his book the 'Library'. It covers creation, the titans, Jason and the Golden Fleece, Heracles, Oedipus, the seven against Thebes, the Trojan War and the return of the heroes. Needless to say these myths are summarised at a rapid pace. Apollodorus takes a chronological format in presenting the myths. Unfortunately, the last part of the 'Library' only survives in an even briefer summary (or epitome). Hyginus did a similar thing in Latin in 277 short chapters. There are 19 helful genealogical tables that help you keep track of who is related to who and plenty of good maps. Greek mythology always took place in the real world so the myths are linked to a particular place. The works of Apollodorus and Hyginus aren't great pieces of literature but they aren't difficult to read and are authentic ancient texts. This book is well worth it!

Great book, great condition. I never actually read it because I dropped the class it was for, but I will be keeping it for a later read.
