I read this book cover to cover in one sitting. I am not a good cook. I did not grow up at the elbow of good cooks. I am not confident. My goal is to cook my way through this book all winter. I made the macaroni and cheese for a potluck and it was a big hit. I thought it could only be made from a blue box. Ha! I had a guest that was a great cook. I made the spinach mushroom coconut curry and it passed her palate with accolades. I even made pie crust from scratch from Kate’s recipe. I can do it!! I have a lot to lean and I know this book can help me. I don’t like to eat out and I like to eat healthy whole food. I don’t eat meat and all these recipes are healthy and adaptable. The biographical stories are revealing of a life unfolding. I hope the philosophy of food evident here leads us to more family and community based meals from the heart. This is a great book that is simple enough for a beginner and simple cook like me but can expand the repertoire of more experienced cooks. Beautifully photographed, practical and essential recipes from the heart. Gracias.
I LOVE reading Kate's books and this one is no exception...even my husband read it!! I'll usually pick up a cookbook only to make a few recipes out of it. Well, we don't even know where to start with this one because every recipe, one after another, looks awesome!! The dishes that Kate chose are crowd favorites and family pleasers and Andrew's pictures will make your mouth water!! Her TINY CHOCOLATE CHIPPERS are out of this world and my husband particularly loved the Enchiladas on a sailing trip! What to try next?!
Received my book yesterday thinking I would just leave it out so I can browse through it. I sat and read and reread and loved the stories, encouragement, love and every little piece of her heart that Kate sends to all of her readers. You can do this, no matter what. Oh and then there are the beautiful photographs and recipes. Already made Stonesoup and plan to give planting garlic another try . Plenty of gardening tips also. I want to try them all. Thank you Kate for being such an inspiration and please dont hesitate to purchase this beautiful book.
Simple, homey, delicious recipes . . . mixed in with a life story that helps us realize "perfect" is not real; let go of what we thought and live as life comes. The recipes are the kind you go over to a friend's house for dinner and wish you had this comfort food at home also.
This will very quickly become the first cookbook I turn to when contemplating what to make. Not only are Andrew Scriviani's photos a joy to look at, Kate McDermott provides recipes that are well thought out and easy to follow along with stories that make you feel as if you are at McDermott's table or in her kitchen. Comprehensive, well written, beautifully designed... I'm really happy to have this book and know I'll be cooking a lot of recipes from it in the months and years ahead.
As anyone who’s purchased her Art of Pie book can tell you, Kate is very skilled not only with her culinary endeavors, but in her writing as well. After waiting several months for my pre-order to arrive, I’m happy to say her new book, Home Cooking, was well worth the wait! Filled with many wonderful recipes for many occasions, there’s a lot to learn from this book.
Kate has done it again. Her cookbook brings us back "home" and her stories are just lovely entertainment. The one problem I have is deciding what to try first. It's what I call a good problem. I'm ordering more soon for Christmas gifts. Thank you, Kate.
I have purchased both of Kate’s cookbooks and love them! They are well written and interesting, but more importantly have great recipes.
