About the Author
American born Luqman Ahmad is a life long Sunni Muslim, the son of converts to Islam. He is a writer, consultant, and until recently, has been the Imam of a Northern California mosque for twenty years. Recently he headed up a new organization (Islamic Center of Del Paso Heights)to address the needs of Muslims, specifically new Muslim converts in the City of Sacramento CA. This book by Imam Luqman A. Ahmad is a must read for those desirous of understanding the condition of African American Muslims in 21st century America. While some readers may feel uncomfortable with the author's direct, unapologetic style, I find it refreshingly honest and a necessary, overdue commentary on the marginalization of African America Muslims by the immigrant Muslim community and at times, ourselves, since the 1980's.
This book is extremely insightful and informative. Mr. Ahmad provides a very honest and thoughtful analysis of the current challenges facing the Muslim community in America based upon his personal experiences and observations.He speaks to the historical dynamics of African American, other indigenous groups, and immigrant Muslims' interactions and the negative effects of psychological colonization. The book also includes pragmatic and islamically sound solutions to positively address these modern day issues.It personally resonated with me as a African American convert to Al-Islam. I highly recommend reading this book with an open mind and heart.
This is a much needed, honest and overdue conversation. Our human potential is tied up in the knowledge of self and the knowledge of God and the integrity of our place as defined by Allah (God), not even ourselves or others. Our historic experience as black people in the Western Hemisphere took a toll and left some residue in how we relate to others, but most importantly how we relate to ourselves and God Himself. Let's face the truths that Imam Luqman Ahmad lifted in Double Edged Slavery... and strive hard to be better in our service to Allah, self & then others.
Until the US Muslim community works on its internal issues we cannot fully deal with other issues going on outside the community. This book helps with that.
