Amazon.com Review

Brenna Yovanoff and Maggie Stiefvater: Author One-on-One Brenna Yovanoff is is the author of The Replacement and has published in various journals. She lives in Denver, Colorado. Recently she sat down with Maggie Stiefvater to discuss Stiefvater's Ballad and The Wolves of Mercy Falls series. Read the resulting interview below, or turn the tables to see what happened when Maggie interviewed Brenna. Brenna: Even though we all know that characters are not authors, we also know that characters sort of are their authors (at least a little bit). Which of your characters would you say is most like you as a person? Maggie: Well, most of my characters are delightfully single-minded, because that is what characters do. So if I were arguing a high-level thesis paper, I’d probably declare that, in fact, all of my characters are really me, just exaggerated, stripped of gray areas and less than crystal clear motivations. Even the evil ones. Maybe especially the evil ones. >br/> That said, I’ve been told I’m quite like Isabel from the Shiver [Wolves of Mercy Falls] series and James from Ballad. Brenna: If Cole from the Shiver trilogy and James from Ballad had to fight each other in a snark-off, who would win? Maggie: James, I’m afraid. Cole has learned to rely far too much on his appearance to win these things and sometimes, my friends, a finely crafted chin will just not get you ahead in life. Brenna: When your characters are romantically involved, they’re willing to fight desperately to be together, often against seemingly insurmountable odds. Like when their significant others turn into wolves and run away into the forest. Where do you stand on the topic of true love? Maggie: I’m a fan/ believer/ proponent of true love. I think it’s worth waiting for, and I also think it’s worth fighting for once you’ve found it. I’m one of those madly in love people who just doesn’t understand why anyone would stand for anything less. I also find long-term dating confusing. I was engaged after a month and a half because, like Grace in Shiver, I am bad at shopping. I just see what I want, and then I go and get it. Brenna: Cole St. Clair’s band Narkotika is, understandably, not a real band. However, if it were a real band, what would it sound like? Maggie: Well, I think that Narkotika, like love, is in the eye of the beholder. It’s supposed to be an edgy, hard, slightly unsettling band, and that varies depending on what you listen to. Also, it was originally an electronica band (think Blaqk Audio). These days I go through life thinking that possibly they would sound like Ringside. Or Korn. Or Carolina Liar. Or Three Days Grace. I realize that these bands sound nothing like each other. I have no good explanation for that. Brenna: What would you say to all the woefully optimistic girls out there (i.e., me) who want to know if Cole would date them? What if they said please? Maggie: Oh, Cole would date you. I guarantee you he would date you. If by “date,” you mean “make out with you in a dark hallway, remove some of your clothing, completely avoid giving you his contact information, disappear, and make you have a resulting existential crisis about why you date boys who treat you badly.” The please wouldn’t be necessary.

Prologue: I’ve read, I believe, all of Stiefvater’s novels, and I think that she an amazing writer. I am also not writing this as a teaser, so there will be reveals that you shouldn’t read before you read the first book. That said I had a hard time getting into this book—not sure why, but perhaps because the major character from the first novel steps back and (semi-central) James becomes the pivotal character. They have moved on from their prior school to a famous high school for musicians. And they have also moved on, to some extent, from each other. Dee’s communication to James consists primarily of unsent text messages. While James is working hard to understand this new, odd school, he starts hearing music coming from the hills, and seeing and hearing one of Them who wants to become his mentor in exchange for . . . . Where is the music coming from? What does she want from James?Read on to find (some of) the answers. Oh, and as was mentioned above, this tale has a walloping finish—two late, late nights for me.

I can't believe it took me this long to finish this particular book of Stiefvater's. This now leaves me with only one book of hers that I have yet to read. Ballad was exactly as the name indicates. The story seemed to form it's own music in reading. What Stiefvater can do with words mesmerizes me. I am a true fan for life. I loved loved loved Nuala and James. Their characters are two of my favorite characters out of all the characters I've ever read from Stiefvater. Their story is beautiful and yet tragic at the same time. You can't help but feel their every emotion and be drawn into this wicked web that is weaved through out each chapter. Trust me when I tell you that this is a book you won't be disappointed with.

I know a lot of the reviewers comment that this didn't live up to the first book. That Dee was a shadow of herself or the writing or story didn't flow in quite the same way... I get where they're coming from, but I don't entirely agree. This book has its own kind of beauty in it. It's different from Lament. It's a different storyline, different POV and, most significantly, the characters are different because they've been shaped by what happened in Lament. James nearly died and he declared his love to Dee without any response from her, then watched as she fell in love with another man. Dee chose her best friend's life over giving her true love life to be with her, thus losing him to the fairy realm. In one fell swoop she lost her best friend (because the "L" word was tossed out there and can never be taken back) and her soul mate (because to not die forever he's now stuck in fairydum somewhere). So when we start this book, they are changed. Dee may be shell of herself, but it didn't feel like a plot device as much as a real continuation of her story, only Ballad wasn't her story, it was James's story, so that shadow was cast against the light of his tale. Yes, it was sad that Dee lost so much of herself, but I think it made sense that after being so brutally used up by the fairies and then losing so much, she had lost so much of herself. So it was probably a good thing this wasn't her POV story, because she'd lost her fight.James is a brilliant character and I loved being in his head for this book. The first person POV shifts between him and Nuala were distinct and engaging and the storyline kept me turning the pages. In addition to the beauty of this author's prose, I love the depth of emotion, the raw humanity of it, even as we're transported to a magical world-within-our-world of fairies. This is a definite 5 star read, in a different way than Lament, but still extraordinary and beautiful.

**spoilers below**It took me a month and a half to read this book...FAR TOO LONG. I just couldn't get into it. I was still caught up on Dee and Luke and when I started reading and figured out there wasn't going to be any real closure on that relationship, I was a little saddened. I hated the character Nuala from beginning to end and by the end of the book I wasn't that fond of James either...he ended up looking like a real jerk. I understand that he was in love with Dee. But he had years to tell her and waited until she fell in love with someone else to do so (typical) Then gets pissed at her for not feeling the same way and gets frustrated at her being heartbroken over her losing Luke (I'm assuming that's what has happened if there isn't going to be a book about them). Give the girl some time and credit for what she did do. I mean she did choose to save his life (james) over LukesI'll admit it was wrong of her to kiss James knowing how he felt about her and then tell him she was thinking of Luke while she did it...that was a pretty crappy thing to say and do. But other than that she was nice to James even when she needed him and he was too busy obsessing about her loving him. When Dee and Luke were together she never once rubbed it in James's face the way he did with his relationship with Nuala. Yeah, we get it he was moving on but did he really have to be such a (add really bad word here)I just really didn't much care for this book and I only read it b/c I had bought it and started it and I didn't want my money and little bit of time go to waste. There were parts in the book that just seemed kind of stupid and silly and I just didn't get it. Like, James dies when chasing Cernunnos????? Did he drag him through water? Did he die from just touching Cernunnos? Did Cernunnos just stop running and decide to kill him? And how did Nuala die too? Or where they really dead? They whole section seemed like it was added just to help with some sort of information that needed to be passed on to the reader but it just added to my hate of this book. When and why did Dee kill Linnet? Did she really see Luke? She mentions how They tricked her...how? Too much was said and then ignored later on so that I was left hanging and wondering. Una and Brennan appeared a bit why couldn't Luke? Frustration frustration.I guess I can see where people who are fans of James will like this book but I didn't know I was supposed to be pulling for him in the last book so I didn't really pay much attention to him until he grew a pair (too little too late)and told Dee he loved her. UGH..... This book just frustrates me and puts me in a bad mood. lol.On a different note...the description of things was beautiful. I could picture every little thing and all the colors and I could even imagine the smells.Since James the jerk and Nuala the (insert bad word rhyming with witch here) got a happy ending, all I can hope for it that Maggie Stiefvater will find it in her heart and creative imagination to give Dee and Luke one as well.I know a lot of people won't agree with me on this but that's ok...it's just different opinions. but I wouldn't mind it if anyone would like to clear up any of the questions above. :-)

This is third edition of Tim Benson's now standard text on healthcare interoperability. It does focus on the specific technologies listed in the title, but it's more than just a handbook. Instead, it begins with a careful discussion of interoperability, and why building interoperable solutions in the healthcare domain has proven so difficult. The analysis is insightful, and well worth reading for any healthcare professional, informatics, or developer. The book offers no magic bullets, but understanding the nature of the problem is key developing solutions. In the second part of the book, Benson moves on to a surprisingly detailed discussion of SNOMED CT, first considering its history and guiding principles, and then delving into the details. It may seem odd that the title of the book only mentions SNOMED. Why not ICD-10, LOINC, or any of the other vocabularies that play such a basic role in EHR systems today? In fact, Benson does discuss ICD_10, LOINC and UMLS. But SNOMED CT is presented as an example of how a vocabulary (really, an ontology) ought to be designed, and is compared in some detail with position dependent coding schemes. In my opinion, this was useful as practical example of the theory discussed in the first part of the book. But it also made me think about software design. The remaining sections of the book focus on HL7, XDS, and FHIR. Unfortunately, the treatment of HL7v2 was brief, almost too brief. But that's also inevitable. It's simply not possible for a book such as this one to cover the protocol in detail. Instead, the book covers enough detail to understand the essentials of message structure, encoding, and the event model. Examples include patient identification (PID) and visit (PV1) But the main focus here is providing a reference point. The next chapters consider HL7 V3, including the Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) and information model (RIM) . The coverage of HL7 V3 was more detailed than I expected, including a discussion of constrained models and the dynamic model. But again, much of the focus was on what has proved successful in HL7 V3, what has not, and why. In this part of the book, as elsewhere, there is a focus on common themes, and we are able to see how different technologies are used to address the same problems. At this point, I'll skip over the section on XDS and move on to FHIR. This shouldn't be taken as a criticism of the chapter on IHE XDS. Rather, I feel less qualified to comment here (and this review is already getting a bit long!)The final part of the book, co-authored with Grahams Grieve, the creator of FHIR, presents Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (pronounced "fire") This is a technology based on the principles of REST and agile computing, and which incorporates many of the best ideas of earlier generations of HL7. This book does a good job of presenting the main ideas from scratch, and does not fall prey to th e temptation to leave out important topics such as extensions, conformance and profiles, and implementing FHIR. Of course, there is much about the details of the specification that is not covered, but the book does a good job of presenting the core principles and underlying concepts. In the end, we see enough of these technologies to understand how they can be used to address problems of interoperability, and that is the point.

Concise, expertly written and extremely useful book for those of us who are trying to move health informatics out of the stone (err, paper) age to interconnect the stakeholders together finally!! This book is a must-read for all serious practitioners. Highly recommended.

It should be required reading for anyone working to achieve better quality, healthier people and smarter spending in healthcare.

Great kindle book but not sure I would purchase the book for my library. I would recommend this series for youths that like a slightly edgier read. If you are looking for a new series for your 11 Son or Daughter this is a good one but I recommend beginning with book 1 in the series. a href="http://www.amazon.com/Dead-New-Black-Marlene-Perez-ebook/dp/B003KGAZWE/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1407933712&sr=1-1&keywords=Dead+is+the+new+black"> Dead Is The New Black /a>

Please make more and more and more!!! I am absolutely in love with this series!! I hope she loves me she loves me not was the beginning of the next book because if it isn't someone is going to "die" and it ain't gonna be me!

Great series. Quick reads & very entertaining.

This book blew my mind! Why did it have to end! Please tell me that daisy or Jessica or at least someone in dead is will appear in another book. I can't believe that daisy and Ryan got married.

My daughter is so sad that this is the end of the series.

Ok. It may seem that these books are too short for my age but I luv the Mystery romance and suspense in this series. The should be not books. Are there going to be more in the fugue

This was the very best series i have ever read in my life!! It is full of mystery, suspense, and a little bit of romance!! I'm sad to see it end now but cant wait to see more work by Marlene Perez!

I give it 5 stars because the book is easy to read and understand, which is important for any student. However, like all textbooks there's a lot of blah, blah, blah (unneeded information). What we students need is for authors to get to the point quickly! Thus, I think textbooks would be better if all information on a topic was presented right away, instead of expanded upon later in the chapter or worse later in another chapter. Moreover, the price for the book is greedily too high, even the rental price was ridiculously high! Rentals periods should be shorter to make the rental price cheaper!!!! I only purchased the book because I had to, no one I know nor any library had a copy where I could borrow it.

I actually read this book as part of my class--a change of pace from normal curriculum. It was interesting, and the examples in the text added to my consumer understanding.

This book was full of relevant information and was not too text-heavy. There are very well constructed visuals paired with the text to create an excellent learning experience. I would rent this book again, as the quality was very good.

Helped me get an A

Definitely did not come in an acceptable condition. The book feels like it is going to fall apart. I will still use it but definitely will not rent from this vendor again. Also I took pictures in case they try to charge me for mishandling.

Good textbook. Informative. Not as dry as most business books.

Product was as stated in the description.

I am a marketing major so this book has all of the concepts that I need to understand. It definitely goes into depth about consumer behavior and gives great examples. I got the book in great condition. However, the data disk is a bit confusing.

#33,075 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

While offered for Kindle, it has some distinct limitations that should be front and center BEFORE you order. One - you can't run the exercises on your mobile device. That's actually OK with me. I'm not sure I want to spend 20 minutes coding using the swype keyboard anyway. BUT TELL BUYERS! Two - and this is more than just a choice of the author - coding examples don't show on Kindle (at least on Android). I don't buy a lot of paper based books anymore. Like zero. When I saw the author decided no mobile devices for coding, I shrugged. OK, so I gotta grab the laptop. No biggie. I'd have the Kindle next to it for reference - WRONG.I'm sensitive to what I get for my money. Not being able to code on mobile, ok. Purely the authors choice, but I get the reasoning.Doesn't work on Kindle, yet that is a choice for purchase? That smacks of either carelessness or deception. I'll lean toward the former, for now. Returned for money paid.

Like other's here I've tried the other online coding schools. So I have some coding experience even if it's not much. The other online coding resources leave a lot to be desired in explanation and examples and they always seem to have a missing "link" in the material. You know, the material you need to bridge the gap, and actually understand what is going on. So after the raving reviews I gave this book a shot. And like a lot of other reviewers have said the first few chapters are great! And easy to follow, you feel like you are making progress fast. Then the "wall" hits. around Ch 10-12. It's NOT the teaching style because it seems to be effective. The issue is with the online material being forced to code his way (using double space, no tab, curly brace own line, keeping white space how he likes it), compounded with what the author is asking for isn't clear (like so many other online coding training). The best example of this confusion is Ch12 (else if): Question: "Code a block, that, if tests above it fail, checks whether one variable doesn't equal another and, if so, displays a prompt that assigns the user's response to a variable that has been declared beforehand." "Correct" Answer:else if (a !== b) { response = prompt("How many dogs do you own?");} So, although in previous chapters the author explained "if" statements && ask a question about "if" code block, you have to figure out that he only wants second half of (block) answer? The questions and answers he expects get bit confusing as the chapters go on. It's frustrating to figure out when the author wants full answers or partial training answers. Especially because the questions are worded poorly at times. My only guess is he is breaking you in for what is to come from employers, you get half of what they want, and you figure out the rest. If I didn't have a little bit of coding background I would have started to get totally confused and not been able to connect the dots that the reader is now expected to give half answers to some of the questions. The good news is his questions do follow a pattern, definitions ~1-4, code of that immediately chapter ~4-13, then code from that chapter, mixed with previous chapters ~14-20.Overall it is a good resource to learn code. But, in the end you will still need multiple training sources, and put all the pieces together to make coding coherent for yourself. Understand this is just one more tool in your resource tool box, and you will need many, many more tools to build your code base foundation.Edit: Ch 26-27 has clear errors, to do with even when formatted like he wants still comes up incorrect. Ch27-18 ask for integer but his example is a fraction.

I have tried out Codecademy.com, freecodecamp.com, and snooped around on MDN.com (Mozilla Developer Network), they are all excellent resources but I think this is the most efficient way to learn a language. This book gives you exercises with instructions that are more similar to how you would approach a problem and subconsciously talk yourself through solving it. I also really enjoy that after each short chapter there is alot of exercises that require very specific answers as this helps me notice mistakes that would cause a problem when my code is executed.Another good practice built into the exercises is that timed-response prompts in combination with the way the author asks a question, this helps you get practice solving problems in a more realistic feel. One last point to make about this resource compared to others is the way the exercises force you to build up your info and continuously recall it throughout subsequent chapters. To wrap up, the in-browser text editors of codecademy.com and freecodecamp.com are far superior in look and feel than the in-browser text editor for this book's exercises, but the questions and method of learning is much greater in this book in my opinion.

The multiple, overwhelmingly positive reviews tell the tale and while no book is perfect,I would like to address some of the more negative reviews. Some seem upset that it's a basic beginner's book. This is stated clearly onthis very page. Being upset that a beginner's book actually is a beginner's bookdoesn't make any sense. Some are upset that code must be entered exactly as specified. In this book,if he asks for (2 + 2) , then (2 +2) isn't going to fly (yes, that missingspace will make your answer "wrong"). Following directions andattention to detail are mandatory. This can be very frustrating in the beginning, but you'll get the hang of it.If you can't learn this way, then don't bother with this book and most certainlydon't ever join the Military or try to "master" anything. You will fail. This book clearly states that you will "Learn by doing". Yet, some reviewersadmitted that they didn't do any of the exercises and then faulted the bookfor their lack of learning. That would be the same as buying a book on strength training, then notdoing any of the exercises and blaming the book for you lack of strengthgains. This book, coupled with the online exercises is an excellent first step on the journey to learning JavaScript.

Life I've Picked, by John McEuen

Review

“Beautifully written, John’s book is an intimate and revealing memoir of a long and diverse music career and the ups and downs of life on the road. We’ve each had a complicated and thrilling journey since our high school friendship sent us off into the world.” —Steve Martin, banjo picker, actor, and writer  “John’s terrific, funny, moving book makes you feel like you are right there with him on some of the most famous stages in the world, in the top recording studios, and on the never-ending road. It makes you feel that an amazing successful career in music and show business is totally within reach—as long as you can play the banjo, mandolin, fiddle, dobro, and guitar brilliantly.” —David Mirkin, producer, The Simpsons  “Nitty Gritty is one of the greatest bands and gifts music will ever hold. John McEuen doesn’t know how not to be honest . . . as a player or an author. You’re going to love this read!!” —Garth Brooks  “John McEuen was a breathtaking prodigy when he made his bones in the Southern California music scene of the early seventies. This book chronicles the realization of that early promise and the challenges of a professional musician’s life on the road.” —Linda Ronstadt  “The road tales are extremely entertaining, but John’s depictions of off-the-road time spent with family are extremely entertaining too. Compelling, candid, hilarious, and heartwarming, The Life I’ve Picked by John McEuen shows he’s not just a great musician—he’s also a hell of a writer.” —Randy Poe, author of Skydog: The Duane Allman Story  “John McEuen has been a hero of mine since I first saw him flying around the stage with a fiddle at a Nitty Gritty Dirt Band show in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. A key member of that legendary band, solo artist of renown, radio host, producing great projects—all the while touring the world as an entertainer and influencer. . . . The Life I've Picked is a fun and poignant read. I thought I knew about John, but there is oh so much more to learn in this thrilling ride.” —Joe Bonsall, The Oak Ridge Boys  An “enjoyable, conversational memoir.”—Booklist Online"I wouldn't want to have to count how many interesting stories small, medium and extra large that appear in John's long life in music, but they sure make for one fine book." —Elmore Magazine "The Life I've Picked is a wonderfully entertaining and impressively informative read from cover to cover." — Midwest Book Review

Ordered my copy early, and just got it a couple days ago. First thing I did was look at all the photos, then dove in. Can’t say enough good things about the book. It really took me back. I decided I wanted to play mandolin when I heard it on Mr. Bojangles, when it first came out. I was probably about 7 years old. I’d later cut my musical teeth on the first Will the Circle Be Unbroken recordings. For me, John was always the stand-out, and I’ve followed his and the band’s career pretty closely. He’s quite the story teller, and I was amazed at the number of cross musical genre friends and connections he has had over the years. Friendships and connections with some of the Greats, as I see it. Hey John! I think you qualify as one of them too! I was impressed with the book’s honesty, but fairness. Especially regarding issues with, and poor treatment from now former band mates. I couldn’t help but feel for John, who worked his butt off to achieve his dreams. The book was also witty and funny. I was lauging out loud more than a few times, often thinking, “Man, you couldn’t make this up!” I’ve really enjoyed the book immensely. Highly recommended. My only disappointment is that it didn’t come in hardback. Thanks for sharing your life John! You are an inspiration to the rest of us front porch pickers out here, and dammit, you’ve had a Wonderful Life! Hope to see you out on the road soon!

I LOVED THIS BOOK! It was a great look back at my growing up years, musically. Honest, funny, sometimes sad. John takes us through a Forrest Gump kind of journey with the many musicians and celebrities he has met along the way. John defines himself as a "banjo nerd". He was always trying to be accepted by the cool kids. Well John, from one music geek to another, you made it! YOU are the cool kid now. Thanks for re awaking my love for Bluegrass. Love ya", Theresa Berweiler

Full disclosure: John's an old friend and played on two of my albums. That said, this is one of the best music autobiographies I've ever read. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that when you KNOW the author, you're less inclined to gush--but the beauty of this book cannot be denied.Unlike some music autobiographies, there is no debilitating addiction problem here--other than music itself. Sure, there are moments of titillation and surprise; juicy tidbits, moments of high hilarity and I'll admit I was moved to tears more than a few times. If you're familiar with The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band--you'll love this look behind the scenes. But if you don't know their work, you'll still love the ride (and, dare I say, feel motivated to get at least of couple of their early albums such as Uncle Charlie and His Dog Teddy, Stars and Stripes Forever, Symphonium Dream--everyone has their favorite, mine is Uncle Charlie, I consider it The White Album of Country Rock). This book should be read by anyone contemplating a career in music--or the arts in general. McEuen's talents are many, but they also include razor-sharp business acumen, ambition and a dogged sense of entrepreneurship--something his bandmates failed to adequately appreciate. There is acrimony and there are issues that must be addressed across 50 years of nonstop music-making. This is McEuen's opportunity to have his say and he does it fairly yet pulls few punches. He paid a personal price for pursuing his dream (divorce, sacrificing time with his kids)--but still managed to raise a fine, super-talented family and retain his sanity and sense of humor. That's rare in this business. He name-drops out of necessity (it ain't braggin' if it's true) and yet his humility is never far away. American life is a constant series of reinventions. Few people have been able to pull that off like John McEuen: late in life he branched out into TV/Film scoring and quickly garnered an Emmy-nomination. He also won a Grammy for producing Steve Martin's banjo album The Crow as recently as 2009.I can't wait to see what this banjophile dynamo does next.

As a longtime NGDB and John McEuen fan I was eager to read this book. But his life has crossed paths with such interesting people, including many, many very well-known artists in the music industry, and he has had such crazy, fun, unlikely experiences along the way, that I think just about anyone, fan or not, would have a hard time putting it down. Aside from being a great musical talent with a storied career, John is a wonderful story-teller, and his story was one worth telling. I love this book.

For any fan of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, this is a cautious read! You are led into a world that I simply didn’t know existed within my favorite band. However, knowing that every band goes through the artistic self changes that afflict musicians, artist, chefs...and nearly all creative talents, it shouldn’t have been surprising that these issues affected NGDB.Regardless of the disappointment that “partners, brothers & friends” is much closer to fantasy than reality, this book is typical John McEuen story telling, which he masters brilliantly at both NGDB shows of the past and now his own road show. The stories always left me wanting more! The Disneyland adventures with Steve Martin to the months filming “Paint your wagon”, you just know there are more stories untold. All in all, I always felt the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band created the background music of my life’s story, they’ve been there since day one with me, and I saw John just last month performing his new show. A tremendous talent on stage, a tremendous story teller by way of his book. While sad for fans, it’s just a passing of time! Like knowing you may never hear Jimmy Ibbotson sing “Ripplin Waters” again...things move on! And in John’s case, things move forward.

Must read for NGDB and/or McEuen fans like me since 1967 Golden Bear era. It answers all the questions in a well written bitter/sweet history of John's rise and the band's sink in the dismal swamp.
